Crown Princess Amalia of the Netherlands fled to Spain in 2022 to escape threats to her security, local media reported this week, shortly before she made her official debut at a state event.

The 20-year-old young woman lived and studied in Madrid for almost a year and a half, according to the public broadcaster NOS, citing royal palace sources.

In October 2022, Amalia was forced to abandon plans to study at the University of Amsterdam due to security concerns, just weeks after enrolling to study politics, psychology, law and economics.

“She can’t live in Amsterdam and she can’t even really go out … It has huge consequences for her life,” Queen Maxima said emotionally at the time.

Officials did not confirm details, but the move comes weeks after reports that Amalia and Prime Minister Mark Rutte had been mentioned in communications by organized crime groups, raising concerns about kidnappings.

The NOS reported this week that the threat to Amalia has not completely disappeared, but that she can live and study in the Netherlands again due to unspecified “measures”. She is said to be living in Amsterdam now.
