John Herdman: A Legacy of Revitalization
The name John Herdman is deeply associated with the resurgence of Canadian soccer. Between 2018 and 2023, he spearheaded the Canadian men’s national team, culminating in their historic qualification for the 2022 Qatar World Cup – a feat they hadn’t achieved in 36 years.
During his leadership, the Canadian team demonstrated significant growth, reaching a then-historic top 40 FIFA ranking in 2021 and establishing dominance within the CONCACAF region. They achieved a remarkable 17-game unbeaten streak in CONCACAF world Cup qualifying and reached the finals of the 2023 CONCACAF Nations League.
Prior to his success with the men’s team, Herdman made significant contributions to women’s soccer. He skillfully guided both the New Zealand and Canadian women’s national teams, most notably leading the Canadian women’s team (2011-2018) to a gold medal at the 2011 Pan american Games and consecutive bronze medals at the 2012 London and 2016
