Jurgen Klopp has returned to management as Germany’s head coach on a four-year deal running until the end of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, succeeding Julian Nagelsmann after a disappointing World Cup exit. Klopp takes charge with a familiar backroom staff, facing his first match against the Netherlands in September.

The German Football Association has secured its primary target to lead the national team through the upcoming UEFA Euro 2028 and 2030 FIFA World Cup campaigns.

Julian Nagelsmann stepped down from his role after Germany lost to Paraguay in the round of 32 last month in North America. The four-time world champions have struggled through three poor World Cup appearances in a row, suffering group-stage exits in 2018 and 2022 before the recent knockout defeat.

Klopp steps into the position after previously working as a television pundit during the tournament and serving as Red Bull’s global head of soccer since late 2024. At his official unveiling on Friday, the former Liverpool manager delivered a direct warning regarding public and media treatment.

“I’m not doing this job for myself. I’m doing it for you. I’m taking this job even though I’ve seen how you’ve treated Julian Nagelsmann. I’m taking it even though I’ve seen how you’ve treated Thomas Tuchel. If you go after my family, I’m gone. If you think I’m rubbish, tell me to my face, and I’ll leave immediately, without asking for any compensation.”

Klopp brings an extensive managerial record to the post. During his nine-year tenure at Anfield, he captured a Premier League title, a UEFA Champions League, and a FIFA Club World Cup, stepping away in 2024 due to fatigue. Before his time in England, he won multiple Bundesliga titles and the DFB-Pokal with Borussia Dortmund.

Coaching Staff Additions and DFB Leadership Changes

To support the rebuild, Klopp has assembled a trusted backroom team. Former Liverpool assistants Pep Lijnders and Peter Krawietz will join him alongside Sven Bender. DFB President Bernd Neuendorf praised the appointment, noting that Klopp stands for passion, credibility and the ability to take people with him like few others.

Meanwhile, structural changes continue within the German federation. Per Mertesacker will step down from managing the Arsenal Academy to become the DFB’s new managing director sport, officially beginning his duties on January 1, 2027.

Upcoming Fixtures and the Road to the UEFA Nations League

Klopp’s immediate focus shifts to the UEFA Nations League campaign. His debut match in charge will take place in September against the Netherlands, a side captained by his former Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk.

DFB sporting director Rudi Voller expressed confidence in the new setup, emphasizing Klopp’s proven ability to develop young players and perform under pressure.
