Unexpected Victory for SC DHfK Leipzig at Annual Sports Awards
Leipzig’s annual Sports Awards, held at the Mediencampus Villa Ida, saw a surprising outcome as the SC DHfK Leipzig handball team was crowned the men’s team of the year. This victory is particularly noteworthy given their current struggles in the Bundesliga, where they find themselves at the bottom of the league standings and experiencing their worst season in club history.
The voting process involved a 50/50 split between fan votes and a panel of experts from the Leipzig City Sports Association, the Saxony Olympic Training Center, the Saxony State Sports Association, and the sports editorial team of the Leipziger Volkszeitung. Despite their on-field performance, SC DHfK secured 892 votes, surpassing the Judo Club Leipzig (853) and the Rugby Club Leipzig (763). Even Bundesliga football club RB Leipzig, a strong contender, received only 755 votes, finishing in fourth place.
SC DHfK’s Managing Director,Karsten Günther, acknowledged the unexpected win, stating,”This is a great surprise. Sportingly, other teams deserved it more this time, and I would like to congratulate them wholeheartedly. We dedicate this award to our fantastic fans and partners who support us wonderfully. Simultaneously occurring, we take it as an incentive to defend our place in the strongest league in the world for Leipzig and SC dhfk.”
The awards also highlighted a controversial exclusion, as Lok Leipzig, last year’s Saxon Cup winner and Regionalliga Nordost champion, was not nominated due to the Stadtsportbund’s criteria limiting nominations to first or second league teams.
In the women’s category, HC Leipzig, a second-division handball team, rightfully claimed the top spot after an undefeated season and a strong push for promotion to the first Bundesliga. Eisschwimmerin Alisa Fatum-Böker and Para-triathlete Martin Schulz were recognized as the top individual athletes.
