If we look only at the price, the protected market is currently cheaper than the free market. This was clearly stated by the president of Arera Stefano Besseghini who spoke today at the hearing before the Productive Activities Commission of the Chamber: “The estimated expenditure on electricity in 2024 for free market customers is around 38 euro cents per kilowatt hour, while for customers of the enhanced protection service is around 33 euro cents per kilowatt hour”. This is an average price, but there is still a difference equal to around 15% which, out of a total of almost 1200 euros per year if we take the average bills are not few.

We remind you that the protected electricity market will end on July 1st and that users who by that date have not chosen a free market operator will automatically be transferred to gradual protection, a facilitated migration regime which will have almost zero marketing costs and a fixed tariff set partly by Arera and partly by the operator who will recall that of the free market.

In short, as we have already written, at the moment it is better to return to the protected market and Besseghini explained to the commission that Arera is doing everything to enforce citizens’ rights. This is because in recent weeks there have been reports of various oppositions from operators when faced with their customers’ requests to return to protected status and then end up in greater protection. “Arera – explained Besseghini – has written to the operators to recommend facilitating the right of consumers to return to the greater protection service. On the Arera website there is a page dedicated to the return, with the mechanisms requested by the 10 operators representing the 90% of the market.”
