Manhattan, Illinois Mourns the Loss of Two Young Students
A wave of grief has washed over the close-knit community of Manhattan, Illinois, following the heartbreaking loss of two junior high students within a week. His grandmother, Denise Oswald, lovingly described Danny’s remarkable spirit. “He was so such a child that would give; you could bully him and he would be your friend,” Oswald shared.Danny was remembered as an artistic, inclusive, and exceptionally kind young boy.
The Tragic Loss of Chance Hunnicutt
Just days after the community began to grapple with Danny’s passing, tragedy struck again. Chance Hunnicutt,13,was fatally struck by a semi-truck while biking with his twin brother and friends. Manhattan police are investigating the incident.
Chance was known for his unique passions and genuine heart. Manhattan Junior High School principal Vince Perillo fondly recalled chance’s interests. “He was open in genuine love of reptiles, ‘The Grateful Dead,’ and of course shoes that he never wanted to crease,” Perillo said.
Alcott Langenberg, a friend of Chance, expressed the shock and disbelief felt by many.”It was awful,” Langenberg recounted. “I just couldn’t really comprehend it.”
A Growing Memorial and Community Support
A poignant memorial has sprung up near the intersection where Chance’s life was cut short. Red and green ribbons, symbolizing remembrance, adorn the village in honor of both boys. However, the most powerful image from Thursday night was the sight of hundreds of candles illuminating the darkness.
Principal Perillo offered a message of hope and resilience. “Manhattan will face the impossible together,” he affirmed. ”We will continue to care for ourselves to care for one another moving forward, one moment, one step, one day at a time.”
