Jana Brejchová, Beloved “Märchenbraut” of the GDR, Dies at 76
Jana Brejchová, a Czech actress who gained immense popularity in East Germany (GDR) for her roles in fairy tale adaptations, has died at the age of 76. While a specific date of death isn’t widely publicized, reports indicate she passed away recently after a period of declining health.
Brejchová became a household name in the GDR through her starring role as the titular character in the 1979 television series “Die Märchenbraut” (“The Fairy Tale Bride”). She also charmed audiences in “Die schöne Arabella und der Zauberer” (“The Beautiful Arabella and the Magician”) in 1968.
According to Jiří Ptáčník, a long-time colleague, Brejchová maintained a strong sense of dignity throughout her illness.“Perhaps she didn’t want people to see her at a moment when illness made her life arduous,” Ptáčník said, as reported by the Berliner Kurier.
Brejchová had largely withdrawn from public life in recent years, ceasing to appear on stage or in front of the camera. Ptáčník explained that “the theater was her life energy, and when she lost that possibility, she quietly withdrew.” Her freind also noted that she had been feeling a loss of strength and, being a naturally reserved person, preferred to step back rather than perform at less than her best. https://www.berliner-kurier.de/ddr/koenigin-der-ddr-gestorben-die-letzten-monate-der-maerchenbraut-li.10019086
