Mariah Carey has released a 30th-anniversary digital edition of her seminal 1995 album, Daydream, featuring 33 tracks that include previously unheard excerpts from her personal writing sessions. The expanded collection, which arrived on digital platforms on July 17, provides fans with an expansive look at the creative process behind the record, incorporating rare B-sides, remixes, acapellas, and live recordings alongside the original studio tracks.
The anniversary release offers a rare glimpse into the development of specific hits, marking the first time Carey has authorized the inclusion of her private writing sessions. These recordings capture the early stages of the songs “I Am Free,” co-written with Walter Afanasieff, and “Melt Away,” a collaboration with Babyface.

A Retrospective of Artistic Milestones
Reflecting on the Daydream era, Carey noted that the album represented a period of significant professional evolution. In a statement shared on social media, she highlighted several career “firsts” associated with the project, including her inaugural rap collaboration on the iconic remix of “Fantasy” with Ol’ Dirty Bastard, her initial experience directing a music video, and her first world tour. The expanded edition serves to mirror these milestones by including new “firsts” for the listener, such as the raw, unpolished audio from her songwriting sessions.

The 33-track collection reinforces the legacy of Daydream, which was originally released in October 1995 as Carey’s fifth studio album. The record helped solidify her place in music history, spawning massive hits such as “Fantasy,” “Always Be My Baby,” and “One Sweet Day,” the latter of which featured Boyz II Men. The anniversary edition rounds out the experience with additional material, including the Da Brat and Xscape-assisted version of “Always Be My Baby” and the B-sides “Slipping Away” and “One Night.”
Physical Releases and Exclusive Visual Content
While the digital version is currently available, Carey has confirmed that physical formats are scheduled for release on October 16. These will include 3LP, two-CD, and cassette editions. Notably, the vinyl collection will feature the entirety of Carey’s 1995 Madison Square Garden concert, marking the first time the performance has been included in a comprehensive box set. A limited-edition pink vinyl pressing of the original 1995 album will also be available for purchase.

To coincide with the anniversary, Carey is set to premiere a previously unseen featurette titled “Making Of Fantasy” on her official YouTube channel on July 20.
Contextualizing the ‘Daydream’ Legacy
The Daydream period was marked by creative experimentation that extended beyond the pop and R&B charts. During the same sessions, Carey secretly recorded an alternative rock album under the band name Chick, titled Someone’s Ugly Daughter. While the album was eventually released, Carey’s own lead-vocal version of the project remains officially unreleased to the public. Interest in this project resurfaced earlier this year when Foo Fighters and Taylor Momsen of The Pretty Reckless performed covers of the tracks “Love Is A Scam” and “Demented” at the MusiCares Person of the Year benefit in Los Angeles.

Carey’s career continues to be a subject of intense industry scrutiny and public interest. In 2026, she was among the high-profile nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, appearing on a shortlist that included artists such as Oasis, Iron Maiden, Sade, and Joy Division/New Order. Although she was not included in the final list of inductees, her nomination underscored her enduring influence across genres.
Legal matters also remain a part of the public record regarding her discography. In December, a judge dismissed a copyright lawsuit brought by country singer Andy Stone, who had sought at least $20 million in damages. Stone claimed that Carey’s hit “All I Want For Christmas Is You” infringed upon his 1989 track of the same name. Following the dismissal, Carey was awarded over $90,000 in legal fees, according to court documentation.
The 30th-anniversary edition of Daydream is available now on major streaming platforms. Fans seeking additional information on the physical releases or the “Making Of Fantasy” featurette can follow Carey’s official social media channels for updates as the October 16 release date approaches.
