Irish Footballers Make Immediate Impact in NFL Pre-Season
The NFL’s growing international presence was on full display this weekend, with several Irish players making their mark during pre-season action.Notably, kicker Mark mcnamee experienced a whirlwind debut for the green bay Packers, stepping onto the field just hours after arriving in the United States. This remarkable story highlights the dedication and rapid adaptation required to succeed at the highest level of professional football.
A dream Realized – And Quickly!
McNamee, hailing from Dublin, took all three kickoffs for the Packers in their 30-10 pre-season loss to the new York Jets on Saturday. His journey to this point wasn’t straightforward. He was selected as part of the 2025 International Player Pathway program and signed with green Bay in July.Though, a visa delay meant his arrival in Wisconsin was postponed. Fortunately, the visa came through last week, allowing him to land in the US the night before his debut. “I landed at about 11pm [the night before the game],” McNamee shared with reporters.
He expressed immense gratitude for the support he received throughout the process. “The Packers and the immigration lawyers have been great with me in just getting it done,it’s not an easy thing to get a visa. It felt like a long time, but it was only two weeks. It was really rapid and I’m really grateful to be here.” He views this as a pivotal moment, not just for himself, but for his family as well.
Packers Coaching Staff Impressed
Packers special teams coach Rich Bisaccia was particularly impressed with McNamee’s performance, given the circumstances. “He got off the plane at I don’t know what time it was the night before and he did a good job for us,” Bisaccia stated.
Bisaccia revealed McNamee was highly regarded during the evaluation process. “We interviewed him at the Combine and he was in the top five guys we had rated from the international players we had over there in the pathway programme.” He highlighted McNamee’s strong leg, maturity, and composure under pressure, adding, “we’ll see what the future brings.”
Other Irish Standouts shine
McNamee wasn’t the only Irish player making waves. Here’s a quick look at the performances of other Irish athletes:
Jude McAtamney (New York Giants): Successfully kicked a 43-yard field goal and an extra point in the Giants’ 34-25 victory over the Buffalo Bills.
Charlie Smyth (New Orleans Saints): Demonstrated his range with a 50-yard field goal late in the game against the Los Angeles Chargers, adding an extra point earlier in the contest.Despite the Saints’ 27-13 loss, Smyth’s performance was a positive sign.
What This Means for the Future
These early performances signal a promising future for Irish players in the NFL. You’re witnessing a growing pipeline of talent emerging from Ireland, fueled by programs like the International Player Pathway. As these athletes gain experience and refine their skills, expect to see even more Irish names appearing on NFL rosters.
For fans, this adds another layer of excitement to the game. It’s inspiring to see athletes overcome challenges and pursue their dreams on the world’s biggest stage.
