About two-thirds of Dutch people indicate that they have confidence in the royal couple. Máxima scores the highest: 69 percent of respondents to the RTL News panel express their confidence in the queen. King Willem-Alexander, who celebrates his 57th birthday today, has to make do with slightly less confidence: 65 percent.

Queen Máxima is therefore also the most popular of the entire royal family. Although her daughter and heir apparent Princess Amalia comes close to the royal couple.

19-year-old Amalia can count on the trust of about 63 percent of Dutch people. It is striking that confidence in her decreases as the age of the respondents increases. In the youngest category of people between 18 and 35 years old, confidence is 68 percent. For people aged 66 or older, that share decreases to 60 percent.

King Willem-Alexander mainly owes the trust that people have in him to how he represents our country abroad. More than three-quarters think he is taking on that role well. Older people in particular share this opinion. A panel member writes: “He ensures a good and respected representation of the Netherlands in the world.” Another is particularly pleased with the ‘much knowledge’ that the king possesses.

People are less enthusiastic about the king’s unifying role, only 54 percent believe that he knows how to connect Dutch people.

Threats Amalia

Princess Amalia is popular, among other things, because of her appearance. For example, a panel member writes: “She looks involved and interested.” Another is particularly impressed with how the Crown Princess is ‘holding up after everything that has happened’. Amalia had to go into hiding after threats and lived in a for years in Spain.

King’s Day popular

The king’s birthday remains popular as a national festival. More than half of Dutch people indicate that they celebrate King’s Day in one way or another.
