Reigning Champion & Rising Stars Set the Stage for Leadville Trail 100 MTB Showdown
The iconic Leadville Trail 100 MTB is poised for another thrilling race this Saturday, drawing a field packed with seasoned veterans and emerging talent. All eyes are on defending champion Haley Rollins, but a formidable group of contenders, including gravel prodigy Michaela Thompson and past winners, are ready to challenge for the crown. This year’s race isn’t just about conquering the grueling 100-mile course; it’s a crucial stop in the Life Time Grand Prix series, adding another layer of intensity to the competition.
rollins Returns with Confidence – and a New Bike Setup
Haley Rollins (Liv Racing Collective) arrives at Leadville with a critically important confidence boost. She dominated the recent Leadville Stage Race, finishing 22 seconds ahead of mountain bike legend Kate Courtney and a minute clear of Sofia Gomez Villafañe and Lauren Stephens. This victory serves as a powerful indicator of her current form and acclimatization to the high altitude.
Though, Rollins admits to feeling more pressure than ever before. “I definitely feel a lot of stress coming into this race, probably more than I ever have,” she shared. “I’m just happy to have proven that I’m capable of doing it again by how the stage race went.”
A notable change for Rollins this year is her bike setup. After initially preparing both a flat-bar mountain bike and a drop-bar configuration, she ultimately opted for the latter – a decision influenced by advice from four-time Leadville winner Keegan Swenson.
“Keegan told me at the beginning of the year to do this setup, I’d probably need to size down a frame. And I didn’t,” Rollins laughed. She initially worried about descending speed, but quickly discovered the drop bars offered enhanced control and even increased speed on technical sections. “To be honest, the drop bars are freaking fun. It’s like new bike day all over again.”
The Competition Heats Up: Villafañe, Thompson, and More
While Rollins is the clear favorite, the competition will be fierce. Here’s a look at some of the key contenders:
Sofia Gomez Villafañe: A two-time Life Time Grand Prix overall winner, villafañe is a consistent threat and currently shares the series lead with Cecily Decker.
Michaela Thompson: This 22-year-old gravel sensation is quickly making a name for herself in the mountain biking world. She finished just behind Rollins and Villafañe in the Stage Race, demonstrating her potential.
Kate Courtney: A decorated mountain biker, Courtney is always a force to be reckoned with, and her second-place finish in the Stage Race proves she’s in top form.
Lauren Stephens: A veteran of the sport, Stephens brings experience and tactical acumen to the race.
* Cecily Decker & Cecile Lejeune: Both are high in the Life Time Grand Prix standings and will be looking to make a move at Leadville.
The Course: Columbine Mine Remains the Decisive Point
The leadville Trail 100 MTB is notorious for its challenging terrain and punishing altitude. The long climb to Columbine Mine, peaking at over 12,000 feet, is widely considered the race’s pivotal moment.
“Columbine, I think the race has blown apart there almost every year,” Rollins explained. “Whether it sticks or not depends on what you’ve done up to that point.”
Riders who have effectively prepared for the altitude and paced themselves strategically will have a significant advantage on this demanding ascent. Many, like Rollins, utilize the Leadville stage Race as a crucial acclimatization tool.
Life Time Grand Prix standings – The Stakes are High
