A Sanctuary for Husain: Designing a Museum Around a Master
The recent opening of a dedicated museum for the iconic indian artist,Maqbool Fida Husain,represents more than just a display of his work. It’s a carefully considered habitat designed to immerse you in his artistic journey. I’ve found that prosperous museum design isn’t simply about showcasing art; it’s about crafting an experience.
Designing this space presented unique challenges, particularly regarding light. Some areas benefited from controlled illumination, while others required navigating the influence of natural light. the building’s architecture itself plays a role - you enter through a cave-like structure, transitioning into a brightly lit concourse adorned with glazed tiles.
This interplay of light was intentional. Natural light subtly filters into the lower galleries, but the upper levels are intentionally enclosed. This allows for precise control over the light frequency, crucial for preserving and presenting older, more delicate artworks.
Collaboration is Key
Creating a museum isn’t a solitary endeavor. A vital part of the process involved close collaboration with the museography team. Their expertise ensured the narrative flowed seamlessly, guiding visitors through Husain’s life and artistic evolution. Ultimately,the core question driving the design was simple: did we successfully tell Husain’s story?
