The life of 14-year-old Milo came to an abrupt end on February 9, 2021 when he died in a train accident in Nieuw-West. His mother, filmmaker Eline Dekker, made the film ‘Touch Life’ with photos and videos from Milo’s phone, about her son’s life and her grieving process.

“He was a really nice, sweet boy, very empathetic, everyone liked him. At least, he was of course sometimes an irritating little guy, but he was very loved, as became apparent after his death,” says Eline at an altar with photos and candles in her living room.

That night, Milo was playing with his friend near the railway near his house in Nieuw-West. He probably thought that there were no trains running due to the heavy snowfall and the lockdown. That wasn’t right and he was hit by a train.

Photos and videos

After his death, his mother Eline went looking for his digital legacy and discovered a wealth of information. “He really took a lot of photos. He was very active on Snapchat, so he shared photos with his friends every day. After his death, I was able to get a very good idea of what he found fascinating and what interested him,” she explains. .

The images not only helped Eline in her grieving process, she also made a film with them as a filmmaker. About her son Milo, but also about her grieving process and how she received support from Rijkshemelvaartdienst, the artist community on the Oude Haagseweg where she has lived for over 30 years. “All my neighbors suddenly came out of their houses to help me,” says Eline. “We opened the coffin a few times and we sang songs and talked to each other a lot.”

Monuments to Milo

The film also features several monuments created in Milo’s memory. Such as the street art-decorated viaduct where he died and which, after much effort, has been bearing Milo’s name since this month. But also a glass igloo that was built by Eline and her neighbors on the community grounds. Milo built a similar igloo out of snow in the days before his death.

Eline: “The igloo was almost ready when my son died and we finished the igloo that night. It stood for a week and during the funeral it started to thaw and the igloo had melted. Then we rebuilt it with glass blocks. “

According to Eline, making the film provided a basis for moving forward. The film Touch Life will be shown in the Eye film museum on Monday at 5 p.m.
