On April 22–26, Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer will visit New York and Washington DC. The visit is an opportunity for Sweden and the US to strengthen transatlantic cooperation to meet cross-border challenges and threats, as well as to exchange experiences in the work against organized crime.

Sweden is currently facing several threats to internal security. Organized crime and violent extremism challenge the safety and freedom of our entire society. Extensive reform work is underway to push back organized crime and restore security.

Exchanging experiences and methods, as well as strengthening international cooperation, is necessary in this work. Among other things, the Swedish delegation will meet the New York police to study their work with technological aids including camera surveillance. Other operational experiences will also be discussed. Also on the agenda in Washington DC is the joint work against violent extremism and terrorism, with a focus on preventive work.

The visit also includes discussions about the platform companies’ work to counter the spread of illegal material and how the companies, in cooperation with Sweden and the USA, can best counter the fact that the platforms are used as tools by the criminal networks.

In connection with the visit, time is set aside for the media. For interview requests, contact press secretary.
