Bridge in Baltimore city, United States of America (US) collapsed after being hit by a Singapore-flagged cargo ship. It turned out that the ship was going to Sri Lanka.
Reported AFP, Tuesday (26/3/2024), this incident occurred at 01.30 local time. The ship crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore.
In the video recorded, in just a matter of seconds almost the entire bridge collapsed. Many vehicles and people plunged into water about 15 meters deep, according to officials.
The cargo ship appeared dark and a power outage was suspected. At that time local officials said that they were searching for seven people. The search and rescue operation involved divers, ships, aircraft, and sophisticated sonar and infrared equipment.
Two people, he said, had been pulled from the water. One person was not injured, but another person was seriously injured and was rushed to hospital.
Baltimore fire chief James Wallace said sonar had found vehicles submerged in water, but he could not say how many. Meanwhile, the Dali ship’s manager, Synergy Marine Group, said no crew members were injured.
CCTV footage shows the ship going dark twice in the previous few minutes. This indicates a power outage on the ship.
Synergy Marine Group said the cause could not be determined. Some experts argue that the bridge’s main supporting structure may not be sufficiently protected to withstand the impact of a ship of that size.
“The significant momentum of these large cargo ships, especially when loading cargo, would have a huge impact,” said Professor Toby Mottram, a structural engineer at the University of Warwick.
“It is clear that the pier could not withstand the impact energy. The extent of damage to the bridge superstructure appears to be disproportionate to the cause, and this is a matter for future investigation,” he added.
