Montembeault Addresses Recent performance and Canadiens’ Power Play Struggles
Montreal Canadiens goaltender Samuel Montembeault is working to rebound from a recent stretch of games where his performance dipped. Following a 6-5 overtime victory against the ottawa Senators, the Canadiens suffered losses of 4-2 to the Buffalo Sabres and 4-3 to the Boston bruins.
Goaltending stats and Self-Assessment
During these three games, Montembeault’s save percentage decreased from .853 to.813, and ultimately to .810. Despite the statistics, Montembeault remained optimistic during a media availability on Monday.
“I think in the last game, it was realy good for 55 minutes. There weren’t many shots, but for sure on the third goal, I think it’s a save I can make,” he acknowledged.
“But aside from that, when we talk about the game against Buffalo and even on the other goals against Boston, they were goals I couldn’t do much about. The last one (against the Bruins) hit Jake (Evans)’s hand and deflected. You can’t look at the stats too much.I’m just going to keep working,” montembeault added.
canadiens’ Penalty Kill Issues
The bruins capitalized on three power-play opportunities during Saturday’s game, highlighting a current weakness in the Canadiens’ penalty kill. Montembeault recognizes his role as the last line of defense in these situations.
Team Support and Perspective
Teammate Brendan Gallagher emphasized that it would be unfair to solely blame Montembeault for the recent results. “I remember two or three really good saves that ‘Monty’ made on the penalty kill. Perception changes depending on whether you win or lose,” Gallagher stated.
“Everyone would like to revisit a play or two during a game. That’s part of our learning process. We’re approaching the final stretch of the season, and everyone wants to play as well as possible. There’s no point in pointing fingers. If we can all elevate our game together, we’ll increase our chances of going on a good run,” the veteran forward continued.
Adjustments and Mental Approach
Montembeault revealed he used Monday’s practice to make adjustments to his positioning, planning to play a bit deeper in his net during penalty kills to reduce his lateral movements. He is also actively working to stay positive and avoid dwelling on criticism.
“I haven’t really looked at social media as the beginning of the season. I try to keep things positive, keep smiling, and enjoy coming to work,” he said.
