Morocco Launches Initiative to Assess Startup Maturity, Boost Innovation
Rabat, Morocco – A new initiative spearheaded by the Moroccan Ministry of Agriculture, in collaboration with the Confédération marocaine de l’agriculture et de développement rural, aims to evaluate the maturity of startups across the country, with a particular focus on those operating within the agricultural technology sector. The program, announced alongside the upcoming Salon International de l’Agriculture au Maroc (SIAM) 2026, seeks to identify and support promising ventures poised for growth and innovation. This comes as Morocco increasingly prioritizes the development of its startup ecosystem and seeks to bolster its agricultural sector through technological advancements.
The initiative, details of which emerged during press coverage of the upcoming SIAM event, is designed to provide a comprehensive assessment of startups’ readiness for investment and scaling. While specific details of the assessment criteria remain limited, the focus appears to be on identifying ventures with strong potential to contribute to the sustainability of agricultural production and enhance food security – key themes of SIAM 2026. The program is expected to attract a diverse range of applicants, from early-stage companies with innovative ideas to more established startups seeking to expand their operations.
Supporting Early-Stage Ventures Through “Level Up – Ideation”
Complementing the Ministry’s assessment initiative, Enactus Morocco and Tamwilcom have launched the “Level Up – Ideation” program, a funding drive designed to support 100 startups across Morocco. Applications for the program are open until March 30, 2026, and are targeted towards individuals with business ideas and startups less than five years ancient. This program offers a significant opportunity for entrepreneurs to access crucial funding and mentorship, particularly in sectors deemed strategic for Morocco’s economic development. According to information released by Enactus Morocco, the program is part of the broader Innov Invest plan run by Tamwilcom, a financial company focused on supporting modest and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
The “Level Up – Ideation” program will prioritize startups operating in key areas including farm technology, health technology, clean energy, green projects, the digital industry, education technology, cybersecurity, and financial technology. Projects will be evaluated based on the strength of the team, the viability of the idea, a sound financial plan, and a comprehensive business plan. The selection process will unfold in stages, beginning with the selection of 20 startups in each region, culminating in a total of 320 project owners participating in a free support program. This support will include intensive training camps, one-on-one mentorship, and ongoing follow-up assistance, as well as guidance on company registration, fundraising, and investor readiness.
SIAM 2026: A Platform for Agricultural Innovation
The timing of these initiatives coincides with the 18th edition of the Salon International de l’Agriculture au Maroc (SIAM), scheduled to take place in Meknès from April 20 to April 26, 2026. SIAM, held under the patronage of King Mohammed VI, is a major event for the Moroccan agricultural sector, attracting exhibitors and visitors from across the globe. The theme of SIAM 2026, “Sustainability of animal production and food sovereignty,” underscores the growing importance of sustainable agricultural practices and the need to strengthen Morocco’s food security. The event will likely serve as a key platform for showcasing innovative technologies and solutions developed by Moroccan startups, as well as for fostering partnerships between entrepreneurs, investors, and industry stakeholders.
The Moroccan government has demonstrated a clear commitment to fostering a vibrant startup ecosystem, recognizing its potential to drive economic growth and create employment opportunities. The launch of these initiatives, coupled with the prominence of agricultural innovation at SIAM 2026, signals a concerted effort to harness the power of entrepreneurship to address key challenges facing the Moroccan agricultural sector. The focus on sustainability and food sovereignty reflects a broader global trend towards more resilient and environmentally responsible food systems.
The Growing Agritech Sector in Morocco
Morocco’s agritech sector has been gaining momentum in recent years, driven by factors such as increasing demand for food, limited water resources, and the need to improve agricultural productivity. Startups are developing innovative solutions in areas such as precision farming, irrigation management, crop monitoring, and supply chain optimization. The country’s favorable climate and strategic location also make it an attractive destination for agritech investment. Alice Lhabouz, an entrepreneur and asset management expert, recently highlighted agritech as a “mega-theme” for the next 20 years, emphasizing its potential to transform the agricultural landscape.
The “Level Up – Ideation” program’s emphasis on farm technology underscores the government’s recognition of the sector’s importance. By providing funding and support to early-stage ventures, the program aims to accelerate the development and adoption of innovative agricultural technologies, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable and efficient food system. The program’s acceptance of applications in French, English, and Arabic aims to broaden participation and encourage a diverse range of entrepreneurs to submit their ideas.
What’s Next for Moroccan Startups?
The application window for the “Level Up – Ideation” program remains open until March 30, 2026. Following the application deadline, Enactus Morocco and Tamwilcom will begin the process of evaluating submissions and selecting the 100 startups that will receive funding and support. The selected startups will then participate in the program’s training camps and mentorship sessions, with the goal of preparing them for investment and scaling. The results of the Ministry of Agriculture’s startup maturity assessment initiative are expected to be announced in the coming months, providing further insights into the state of the Moroccan startup ecosystem.
The success of these initiatives will depend on a number of factors, including the quality of the applications received, the effectiveness of the support programs, and the availability of follow-on funding. But, the Moroccan government’s commitment to fostering innovation and supporting entrepreneurship suggests a positive outlook for the country’s startup ecosystem. The upcoming SIAM 2026 event will provide a valuable opportunity to showcase the progress being made and to attract further investment in the sector.
