Tesla has made significant cuts to its marketing department, reversing its recent foray into advertising approved by CEO Elon Musk less than a year ago.

The company disbanded its US advertising team, led by senior manager Alex Ingram and consisting of approximately 40 employees, as part of ongoing efforts to streamline operations. Ingram himself is among those affected by the layoffs. Although Tesla is keeping a smaller marketing team in Europe, significant layoffs were also reported at Tesla’s Hawthorne, California-based design studio and staff.

Tesla has traditionally shied away from traditional advertising methods, relying instead on a word-of-mouth approach to grow its brand. Last year, however, Musk announced that Tesla would move into advertising, which led to the creation of the growth team under Ingram about four months ago.

The decision to limit marketing efforts comes amid pressure from investors for Tesla to prioritize marketing, especially as the global electric car market has become more competitive and growth has slowed.
