DAMASCUS – This new rocket attack occurred on a United States (US) military base in northeastern Syria on Sunday (21/4/2024).

This incident comes after a lull in attacks since February and comes against a backdrop of rising tensions in the region between Israel and Iran.

An estimated five rockets were launched from Iraq towards the US military base, according to an Iraqi security source and a US official quoted by .

The attack is believed to have been launched from Zummar, an Iraqi town on the border with Syria.

An unnamed US official said a “failed rocket attack” targeted a coalition base in Rumalyn, but no American personnel were injured.

It was not clear whether the rockets failed to reach the base or were destroyed.

A search operation launched by Iraqi forces deployed in the area resulted in the discovery of a vehicle described as a small truck which they claimed was used in the attack.

The truck with a rocket launcher mounted on its back was parked in Zummar and caught fire from the explosion of an unfired rocket, according to a military official, who added there were warplanes in the sky at the same time.

The American official mentioned above claimed that US-led coalition aircraft in Iraq and Syria carried out the attack on the launcher.
