NASA and Space are transforming hardware from the scrapped Habitation and Logistics Outpost (HALO) space station module into a trio of new demonstration missions. According to Spaceflight Now, the initiative will use components from the former Space program to support a series of Lunar Infrastructure Demo missions known as LID-1, LID-2, and LID-3.
NASA and Northrop Grumman Repurpose Canceled Gateway Hardware for Lunar Base Demos
The LID-1, LID-2, and LID-3 missions are designed to mature lunar surface power, thermal, autonomy, communications, and hosted payload services. These technologies are intended to survive the extreme temperatures of the lunar night near the Moon’s south pole and scale into persistent infrastructure, according to updates shared by Spaceflight Now.
From Canceled Moon-Orbiting Station to Surface Base Support
HALO was initially built as a habitation module for NASA’s moon-orbiting Space space station. Under previous Artemis plans, NASA intended to launch Gateway elements so that the Orion spacecraft could dock with the station during the Artemis 4 mission, cross onto SpaceX’s Starship Human Landing System, and descend to the lunar surface, as detailed by Spaceflight Now. NASA originally awarded Northrop Grumman a $187 million contract in July 2019 to complete the preliminary design.
According to an interim draft memo written by Brian Mullins, deputy assistant inspector general for audits within the Spaceflight Now, the contract underwent multiple revisions:

- 2021: Converted to a firm-fixed price contract valued at $1.3 billion with a May 2025 due date.
- September 2024: Shifted to a cost-plus-award-fee contract priced at $1.8 billion with an October 2026 delivery date.
- April 2026: NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman issued a stop-work order when the contract value reached $1.9 billion, driven by schedule impacts from corrosion addressing within HALO’s primary structure.
Rather than letting the unfinished module sit unused, Northrop Grumman is adapting its electrical and mechanical components. To help NASA move faster … HALO’s power, data and mechanical interfaces will enable NASA to move with speed and begin gathering real lunar surface performance data sooner,
the company stated in an Aug. 4 press release reported by Space.
South Pole Environment and Timeline Details
NASA is targeting the lunar south pole due to water ice concentrations detected in permanently shadowed regions, which can potentially be harnessed for potable water, radiation shielding, and rocket fuel. However, operating in the region presents severe environmental hurdles, including extreme temperature swings ranging from -334 degrees Fahrenheit to 130 degrees Fahrenheit, as noted by Spaceflight Now.

While neither NASA nor Northrop Grumman specified exact launch dates for the LID missions, agency officials stated in a video that the demonstrations will begin during Moon Base Phase One, an era of development running from the present through 2029. Neither organization disclosed the financial cost associated with converting the HALO hardware into the three demonstration missions.
