Seamless Setup: Importing Your Existing Passwords
One of my biggest frustrations with password managers is a clunky import process. I personally manage over 600 entries – logins, credit cards, notes, and more – so a smooth transition is crucial. Thankfully, NordPass excels here.
When you first install the browser extension,NordPass promptly prompts you to import your data. It provides clear instructions for importing from popular browsers like Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Brave, and also from other password managers like LastPass, 1Password, and Dashlane.
I tested the import function with my Proton Pass data, and NordPass successfully identified all 608 entries without a single hiccup. This is a significant win for usability.
However, there’s one caveat. NordPass doesn’t currently support storing Time-based One-Time Password (TOTP) codes directly within the app. this means you’ll need to rely on a separate authenticator app like Google Authenticator or Authy for two-factor authentication. NordPass does intelligently detect existing 2FA codes and suggests using a third-party app, wich is a thoughtful touch.
What Can You Actually Store in NordPass?
NordPass takes a more streamlined approach to entry types compared to some competitors, like 1Password. Instead of a vast array of pre-defined options, it focuses on the essentials.

While it lacks specialized entry types like SSH keys or medical records (found in 1Password), this isn’t a major drawback. NordPass compensates with powerful customization options. You can add custom fields to any entry, choosing from text, hidden text, or date formats.
Plus, you can attach files and add detailed notes. A notably useful feature is the ability to set reminders for document expiration dates – perfect for keeping track of your driver’s license or passport.
Association & Navigation: Keeping Your Vault Tidy
Navigating your NordPass vault is intuitive. The web app features a clear left-hand menu with shortcuts to each entry type. Below that, you’ll find options for organizing your data into folders, as well as quick access to features like email masking, password health checks, and the data breach scanner.
Though, organization is where NordPass shows some limitations. You’re restricted to folders and the basic entry types. Unfortunately, you can’t nest folders within each other, and tagging isn’t supported. This means you’ll need to rely on broad categories like “Personal” and “Work” without the ability to create more granular organization.
