Lando Norris finally took the first victory of his Formula 1 career after 110 Grand Prix starts. The McLaren driver triumphed in the Miami Grand Prix, beating Max Verstappen (Red Bull) and Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) who finished second and third.

The temperature on the track before the start of the race in Miami was 43 degrees, and that of the air – 28 degrees. The predominant tire choice was a medium. Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso, Kevin Magnussen and Daniel Ricciardo were on hard. Only Valtteri Bottas had chosen software.

“There’s a lot of mediums around me,” Hamilton called into the radio before the start of the warm-up lap.

Carlos Sainz was told that the wind had picked up a bit.

At the lights, Max Verstappen drove perfectly to take the lead. Charles Leclerc did not start very well and was overtaken for a moment by his teammate Sainz

Sergio Perez tried to pass in front of both Ferraris but went sideways and almost hit Verstappen and the Ferraris. During that time, Oscar Piastri passed Sainz for third and Perez took fifth. Lando Norris was sixth, followed by Nico Hulkenberg, who overtook a well-run Hamilton. Yuki Tsunoda was also stalking the Mercedes and George Russell rounded out the top 10 with the second F1 W15.

After qualifying, Leclerc wanted to stay close to Verstappen – within a second, which would allow him to use DRS. Already in the third of a total of 57 laps, however, he was already 1.7 seconds behind Verstappen. Piastre, however, is less than a second behind the Ferrari, and Sainz was half a second behind McLaren. In the fourth round, Piastri successfully overtook Leclerc and came second.

Air traffic control reviewed the situation with Perez from the start of the race and decided that there would be no further action. The Mexican pilot was also investigated for a false start. On the seventh lap, Sainz said he had good speed. Hamilton took back seventh place from Hülkenberg, but then he made a mistake and the Haas driver came out in front of him again.

The battle between Hamilton and Hülkenberg continued until on the tenth lap Lewis attacked again and overtook. Almost immediately after, Russell tried to do the same, but failed. In the 12th round, Lance Stroll, Alex Albon, Logan Sargent and Bottas went through the boska. Russell also managed to pass Hulkenberg. Immediately after that, Nico went through the pits and put on hard tires.

Sainz asked again if they were going to try anything on the track. The response from Ferrari was that they were looking at options. On lap 15, Verstappen was 2.9s ahead of Piastri, who was almost 0.7s ahead of Leclerc. Sainz was moving just over a second behind his teammate. Norris was chasing Perez for fifth and was making attempts to overtake him. Hamilton, Russell, Tsunoda, Esteban Ocon followed in the column.

Perez entered the pits in the 18th round. He put on hard tires and came back tenth on the grid. Leclerc did the same on lap 20. Perez went ninth and Norris set the fastest laps, gradually closing in on Sainz.

“I hit a peg and you have to look at the front wing,” Verstappen called over the radio

This happened when going through the chicane. The peg broke and the pieces were left on the track. After almost a full lap, flight control launched virtual safety car mode. Some of the drivers changed tires at that very moment. The virtual safety car ended quickly, and Verstappen went through the pits on lap 24 and returned to fourth on the grid. The order was Piastri, Sainz, Norris (all three without pitting), Verstappen, Leclerc, Hamilton (without pitting), Perez, Tsunoda, Guanyu Zhu, Daniel Ricciardo.

On the 27th lap, Piastri and Sainz went through the pits. In lap 28 there was an incident between Kevin Magnussen and Logan Sargent

The Haas pilot continued with a broken front wing. The American driver crashed directly on the track in what was truly his home race – he lives very close to the track in Miami. A security car came out. Perez and Tsunoda entered the pits, for the Mexican pilot it was the second shift. Norris made his first stop on lap 30.

Magnussen received a 10 second penalty for causing a crash. This is another penalty for the Danish driver in the weekend in Miami after the scandal he caused with his behavior during the sprint.

The safety car came out at the end of lap 32. Verstappen attacked Norris but remained second for the time being. Leclerc was third, followed by Piastri, Sainz, Perez, Tsunoda, Hamilton, Russell, Ocon.

There was a collision between Sainz and Piastri as the Ferrari driver attempted to overtake his McLaren rival. Hamilton (with medium) overtook Tsunoda for seventh place.

“Just tell him to give me the position so he won’t be punished. Call McLaren to tell him,” Sainz called over the radio, convinced that Piastri had taken an advantage by going off the track.

Air traffic control decided that there would be no further action on the matter.

“Unbelievable,” was Sainz’s reaction.

At the front, Norris was almost 2 seconds ahead of Verstappen.

Sainz’s irritation was so severe that his flight engineer tried to calm him down and told him he had 20 laps to go so he needed to focus. Carlos almost tripped to leave him alone to drive.

“I can’t get the car to turn. A tragedy,” said Verstappen over the radio, who was over 2.6s behind Norris on lap 40

In the same round, Sainz got ahead of Piastri as they got together again, the Australian counter-attacked, but made a mistake, took off and the Spaniard took fourth place. Oscar was called by the McLaren pit that his front wing was broken and he had to go through the pits. His nose was changed there. Sainz told his team that something was wrong with his car and asked them to check the aero compression. Hamilton chased Perez, who was also on medium tires.

Three laps before the checkered flag, Norris’ lead over Verstappen was already over 6.5 seconds. At this point, Albon spun off the track in an attempt to defend himself from Daniel Ricciardo. However, the safety zone was large enough – the Williams pilot avoided the impact and returned to the track.

By the end, Norris’ lead only increased and reached over 7.6 seconds. Verstappen reached the checkered flag second, Leclerc third.
