Oilers’ Young Wingers Face Early Season Scrutiny
The Edmonton Oilers entered the season with optimism surrounding two promising 21-year-old wingers.Ike Howard and Matt Savoie both arrived with the potential to substantially contribute to the team’s offense. However, their initial opportunities alongside connor McDavid haven’t yet translated into the desired results.
Both players have received a chance to showcase their skills on McDavid’s line, but production has been limited thus far. This has prompted head coach Kris Knoblauch to experiment with line combinations in search of a spark.
A Swift Look at the Lineup Adjustments
Savoie initially skated with McDavid and leon Draisaitl on Thursday against Montreal. Sadly, his time in that coveted spot was short-lived, as Knoblauch reshuffled the lines during a frustrating team performance.
Then, on Saturday in Seattle, it was Howard’s turn to try and find chemistry with McDavid and Andrew Mangiapane. however, by the third period, Jack Roslovic had taken Howard’s place, signaling Knoblauch’s ongoing quest for a consistent, effective scoring lineup.
“I’m not over-thinking it, to be honest,” Howard shared before Saturday’s game, expressing his eagerness to contribute. “Just excited to get out there and play a good game.”
Assessing Howard’s Early NHL Performance
Currently, Howard has registered one goal, a -1 plus/minus, and nine shots on goal through his first eight NHL games. He clearly possesses a shooter’s touch, but thriving at the NHL level requires more than just a quick release.
Successfully finding prime scoring areas, with the time and space to utilize that shot, is a complex challenge. It’s a process that demands continuous development and adaptation.
“It’s a long process to get to where I want to be, but it’s been feeling good,” howard explained. “It’s gotten better each game. I’ve always had that shooter’s instinct – maybe it’s something you’re born with. I love to shoot pucks, get good looks, and score goals.”
Coach Knoblauch’s Perspective
Knoblauch acknowledges Howard’s progress, even while noting Roslovic’s stronger performance on Saturday. Initially, Howard appeared to be struggling with the speed and pressure of the NHL game.
“Things early on were closing on him fast,” Knoblauch observed. “It felt like he didn’t have an out with the puck, or didn’t know what the next play was.”
However, the coach has seen a noticeable shift in Howard’s confidence. Now,he’s demonstrating an ability to navigate tight spaces and make smarter decisions with the puck. “Now, he seems confident,” Knoblauch said. “Things aren’t closing, and he’s able to make the next play.”
What this Means for the Oilers
The Oilers’ coaching staff is clearly committed to developing these young players. The early line changes aren’t a sign of discouragement, but rather a proactive approach to finding the right fit.
You can expect continued experimentation as Knoblauch seeks to unlock the offensive potential of Howard, Savoie, and the entire Oilers roster. The team’s success hinges on finding consistent scoring depth, and these young wingers represent a key part of that equation.
