The foundation crisis in the Netherlands largely ignores Flevoland. This is evident from the Climate Effect Atlas, which also includes our province. There is some post rot in a number of places, but the risk of this is very low. There may be subsidence in the area around the Maxima power station in Lelystad, near Flevokust Haven.

“Many buildings in the Netherlands are built on unstable soil. That is why more than 400,000 buildings in the Netherlands are expected to suffer foundation damage,” says the Council for the Environment and Infrastructure. In Flevoland the problem is exactly the opposite. Due to the construction of the polder on the seabed, gardens, streets and fields are sinking here, and not so much the houses. The ground is subsidence extra quickly in a number of places in Lelystad, Dronten and Noordoostpolder. The pace and extent of land subsidence can have major consequences for where building and farming can take place in Flevoland. The Zuiderzeeland Water Board indicated at the end of last year that due to soil subsidence, agriculture may no longer be possible everywhere in Flevoland.

Maxima power plant in danger?
The Maxima power plant is located in the area where there may be subsidence. However, the plant itself is not in danger, a spokesperson said. The power plant is located on an artificial island that was constructed with an enormous number of piles during the construction of the polder. In 2008, additional reinforcement was added with the construction of the new current power station.
