Oppenheimer by Christopher Nolan emerged as the big winner at the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards on Saturday evening, writes BBC. The event is considered an important predictor of success at the Oscars in March.

Oppenheimer won the award for Best Cast in a Motion Picture, as well as Best Actor (Cillian Murphy) and Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.). The film thus secured three of the four nominations, despite being a major opponent Barbie failed to secure any of the four nominations.

The winners of the annual ceremony, held in Los Angeles, are chosen by other actors. Cillian Murphy said his win was “extremely, extremely special for me because it comes from you guys”.

“Twenty-eight years ago when I tried to be an actor, I was a failed musician,” Murphy recalled. “I felt like an intruder. But when I look at all of you, I know I’m part of something truly amazing. So thank you very much.”

Lily Gladstone won the Best Actress Award for her work in Killers of the Flower Moon. “This has been a difficult year for all of us,” she said, referring to the Hollywood strikes in 2023. “I am so proud that we have come here in solidarity with all our other unions.”

The Bear scored in the television category

In the television categories The Bear also walked away with three prizes. The series won the award for best cast in a comedy series and lead actors Ayo Debiri and Jeremy Allen White won an award.

Succession only received one of five nominations and won the award for best cast in a drama series. Steven Yeung and Ali Wong both won awards for their roles in the series Beef. The award for best male role in a drama series went to Pedro Pascal The Last of Us.

The Oscars ceremony will take place on Sunday, March 10.
