The Danube Upper Austria Open powered by SKE (May 5-12, 2024) begins next Sunday at 10:00 a.m. in Mauthausen with the qualifying games. For the third time, top international tennis can be admired in Upper Austria at the ATP 100 Challenger. The preparations are entering the home stretch and the anticipation can already be felt in every corner. Austria’s future hope Joel Schwärzler, who currently also plays for Union Mauthausen in the win2day Bundesliga, has big plans for the home tournament and is looking forward to an exciting tournament week.

A touch of international world class permeates the sports region of Upper Austria. The euphoria among local tennis fans has already been fully rekindled. There are enough reasons for this. One of them is Schwärzler: The 18-year-old local hero and currently number one in the ITF youth rankings has big plans. The Vorarlberger is one of the greatest hopes for the future and wants to show his best side on home clay and consistently continue his successful path of the last few weeks. In April, Schwärzler beat JJ Wolf for the first time against a former top 100 player on the ATP Challenger Tour in Savannah (USA) – the American was number 39 in the world in February 2023 – and climbed in the ATP Ranking continues to move up quickly. Great anticipation for Schwärzler

“My development in the last few weeks and months has been really very good. I have become much calmer on the pitch and when building up points. “I can now implement the things that I work on and do in training really well in the matches,” revealed Schwärzler, who recently played his first quarter-final on the ATP Challenger Tour in Tallahassee (USA). The ITF Junior Ranking is just a positive snapshot for the ambitious Harder, which has given him eight starts in Challenger tournaments of his choice. “Number one was one of my interim goals. I have now achieved that, it was an important milestone for me and the ticket to the Challenger tournaments with a wildcard. But my path continues, I work hard for that!”

Schwärzler now has his home tournament waiting for him: the Danube Upper Austria Open powered by SKE. It’s no surprise that teenagers are already full of energy. “I’m really looking forward to Mauthausen. I’ve recently been playing for Union Mauthausen in the Bundesliga, so it will be a home game. I like the places and the facility and feel really comfortable there. The basic requirements for a good week of tennis are therefore met.”
