This Saturday, Pedro Pichardo secured the minimum in the triple jump to guarantee qualification for the Paris’2024 Olympic Games, by jumping 17.38 meters on his first attempt in China, at the Xiamen meeting, relating to the Diamond League. The Portuguese triplist, who needed to reach or beat the 17.22 meter mark to be present at the Games, was unforgiving in the initial test and managed a jump that guaranteed him, so far, the best personal best of the season. The personal record is set at 18.08m.

Pichardo would later improve his mark, jumping 17.51 ​​meters in the sixth and final test, thus taking victory in the event that marks his return to the competition, almost a year after the last test. In Xiamen, the Portuguese triplist left the competition quite long, with Fabrice Zango (17.12), from Burkina Faso, and the Chinese Su Wen (16.80) completing the podium.

The other Portuguese in the competition, Tiago Pereira, was seventh, with 16.41 meters, and in the discus throw Liliana Cá was also seventh, with 63.27 meters.

In athletics, Pichardo joins the Portuguese team for Paris’2024, now made up of nine athletes, Pedro Buaró (pole vault), Samuel Barata and Susana Godinho (marathon), Isaac Nader (1,500 meters), João Coelho (400 meters), Auriol Dongmo (weight), Ana Cabecinha (20 kilometers walk) and Irina Rodrigues (discus).
