Oscar Piastri topped the standings in the second free practice session at the Suzuka circuit, which took place in rainy conditions. The McLaren driver recorded a lap in 1:34.725 min. Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) and Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) finished second and third in the session.

Conditions before the start of Friday’s second practice session at Suzuka were different to the first. The air temperature was 14 degrees Celsius, and that of the asphalt – 17. It was raining over the track, which, however, did not interfere with the numerous fans in the stands.

A few minutes before the start of the session, it became clear that Williams would not be able to rely on Logan Sargent. The young American crashed during the early session. As a result, his car had serious damage to the gearbox and front suspension, which could not be repaired in such a short time

In the first 5 minutes of the session, there was no activity on the track. All the drivers were in the garages of their teams waiting for the conditions to improve. Some of them were in their cars and some were not. Daniel Ricciardo is back behind the wheel of his car. The Australian gave way to Ayumu Iwasa in the first free practice session.

Hamilton took to the track first. The Mercedes racer was on Pirelli’s medium hard tires. Hamilton explained to his flight engineer that the tarmac was dry, but there were some wetter sections. Hamilton returned to the pits and was informed that there would be no more rain. At the same time Ricciardo also appeared on Suzuka and said that the rain had increased. The Visa RB pilot also did not record a time and returned to the pita.

As the session progressed, the Suzuka rain picked up again. Therefore, there were no drivers who had recorded times. However, the bad weather did not hinder the numerous fans in the stands who wore interesting hats and costumes

Piastri hit the track shortly before the second session of the day cut in half. The McLaren driver was on intermediate tyres.

“It’s not that wet,” Piastri told his race engineer over the radio. The Australian also did not record a competitive lap and headed to the pits. Meanwhile, Tsunoda, Bottas and Zhu also appeared on the track. The Japanese also recorded the first lap in 1:42.304 min. The second time was given by Ricciardo, which, however, was much weaker. Tsunoda improved his time to record a 1:40.946 followed by Ricciardo who also improved his lap. The two were the only drivers on the wet track in Suzuka.

The Sauber drivers returned to the track again for more installation laps before returning to the pits. Only Tsunoda and Ricciardo had recorded times on the wet asphalt at Suzuka. Albon also made a brief appearance on the track.

About 5 minutes before the end, Magnussen appeared on the track with Pirelli soft tires. However, the Haas driver came home to the pits. Piastre and Hulkenberg also bet on soft slicks. The McLaren driver topped the standings with a time of 1:39.105 min.

Piastre eventually topped the standings in the second free practice session at the Suzuka circuit. The McLaren driver was followed by Hamilton and Leclerc. Fourth and fifth were Tsunoda and Ricciardo. Sixth and seventh were Norris and Sainz. Hulkenberg, Bottas and Ocon also entered the top 10. The drivers of Red Bull, Aston Martin and some of their colleagues did not record times in the session.
