Pixel Camera Gets a Refresh with Material 3 Expressive Design & New Features
Google’s Pixel camera app is evolving, and the latest update – version 10.1 - brings a significant visual overhaul alongside some functional tweaks. This update focuses on streamlining the settings menu and adopting Google’s modern Material 3 Expressive design language. Let’s dive into what’s new and how it impacts your photography experience.
A New look for Camera Settings
Previously, the Pixel camera settings were organized with an “Advanced” menu separating more granular options. Google has now opted for a single, unified settings list, grouping preferences into logical categories. This makes finding what you need much easier and more intuitive.
The visual changes are striking, thanks to the implementation of Material 3 Expressive containers. These containers offer a more dynamic and visually appealing interface, enhancing the overall user experience. You’ll notice a cleaner, more modern aesthetic throughout the settings.
What’s Inside the New Settings Menu?
The reorganized settings are broken down into the following sections, offering a clear structure for your preferences:
* General: Control core camera behaviors like saving location data, camera shutter sounds, device storage management, and camera scan suggestions.
* Composition: Fine-tune how your photos are framed with options for framing hints, grid types, selfie mirroring, and guided framing assistance.
* Fast Access: Customize fast access controls, define the volume key’s function, and adjust the palm timer for convenient self-portraits.
* photo: Adjust image quality and features, including rich color enhancement, Ultra HDR, social media depth effects, frequent faces recognition, astrophotography mode, and RAW/JPEG capture control.
* Video: Optimize video recording with stabilization, audio zoom, efficient storage options, and frame rate optimization.
* Advanced Capture: Customize advanced features like timer light visibility and dirty lens warnings. (Pixel 9 and later will include underwater photography and video options.)
* Help & Feedback: Easily access help resources and send feedback directly to Google.
Introducing Optimize FPS
One notable new feature debuting with Pixel Camera 10.1 is “Optimize FPS.” This intelligent setting automatically adjusts your video recording frame rate from 60 FPS to 30 FPS when necessary. This ensures a smoother recording experience, especially when your device is under strain. It initially appeared on the Pixel 10 and is now available on the Pixel 8 Pro and beyond.
Getting the Update
Pixel Camera 10.1 is currently rolling out through the Google Play Store. You can find it by searching for “Google Camera” in the app store. If you’re eager to try it promptly, you can also sideload the update, though this requires downloading a 1.47 GB file.
This update represents a thoughtful refinement of the Pixel camera experience, combining a visually appealing design with a more organized and user-pleasant settings menu. It’s a welcome change that will undoubtedly enhance your mobile photography and videography.
