Prichard Colón Passes Away at 33 After a Decade in a Coma From Boxing Injuries

Prichard Colón, the former professional boxer from Puerto Rico who spent a decade in a persistent vegetative state following a bout in October 2015, has died at the age of 33. His father confirmed the passing in a public statement shared to social media, bringing a tragic close to a long medical ordeal.

The former fighter suffered a subdural hematoma during a bout against Terrell Williams in October 2015. According to reports from The Ring, Colón absorbed multiple illegal blows to the back of the head during the contest. After showing signs of disorientation and dizziness, he was disqualified when his corner removed his gloves. Colón collapsed after leaving the ring and remained unresponsive for 221 days before transitioning into a persistent vegetative state.

Throughout the subsequent ten years, Colón remained unable to speak, though he later learned to communicate using computer technology.

Remembering a Promising Career Cut Short

Before the bout against Williams, Colón held an undefeated 16-0 professional record with 13 knockouts between 2013 and 2015. He also boasted an amateur background that included 170 wins and 15 losses.

Following the announcement of his death, sports organizations expressed their condolences to the Colón family. World Boxing Organization (WBO) President Gustavo Olivieri issued a statement honoring the late fighter’s endurance.

“Prichard’s life was defined by courage, perseverance, and an extraordinary fighting spirit,” Olivieri stated. “His story transcended the boxing ring, deeply touching the boxing community, and for years, everyone supported him with respect, admiration, and hope.”

Colón’s father shared a poignant message on the athlete’s official Facebook page regarding his son’s passing and unfulfilled dreams. “Good morning, my people. It is with great sadness that I inform you that my son Prichard has left this world and is now in a better place,” he wrote, as reported by The Ring. “I did everything possible to fulfill his wish, his dream—to take him on vacation to Puerto Rico, but that could not be done. Thank you for your love and prayers over the years. Please pray for us as much as possible.”
