Colombia’s oil sector is undergoing a significant shift, with GeoPark’s recent US$400 million acquisition poised to make it the largest private oil producer in the country. This development comes amidst fluctuating national production levels and a changing landscape of oil companies operating within Colombia.
GeoPark’s Rise and the Private Sector’s Growing Role
Excluding state-owned Ecopetrol and it’s subsidiary Hocol, which collectively produce around 485,057 barrels of oil per calendar day, GeoPark aims to reach a production level of 90,000 barrels per day by 2028. This will position the company as a dominant force in the private sector.
Current Private Sector Producers
As of November 2025, Frontera Energy was the leading private oil producer in Colombia, averaging 58,099 barrels per day.Agencia Nacional de Hidrocarburos (ANH) data shows GeoPark followed with 42,889 barrels per day.Combined, Frontera and GeoPark accounted for approximately 12% of Colombia’s total oil production in 2025.
