Istanbul University Faculty of Forestry retired faculty member, forest engineer and naturalist Prof. Doğan Kantarcı objected to the plan to transport millions of cubic meters of soil, which swallowed 9 workers in the Erzincan İliç mining disaster, with 400 thousand trucks, with an ecological study. Kantarcı, in his study titled “An ecological evaluation on the Çöpler Gold Mine leach pile collapse and the problem of dirty water leakage from the material”, made the following warnings and made striking suggestions: “The region, which is a very arid steppe, is subject to rain and snow in the winter and spring months, which are the rainiest periods. It receives a maximum daily rainfall of 27 to 65 millimeters, including its waters. The material migrated from the heap leach filled the dry stream bed as a mass approximately 50 meters thick.

TRANSPORTATION NOT POSSIBLE

Monthly rainfall and high rainfall amounts measured in Divriği cannot even fill the 1 meter thick section in the upper part of the collapsed material. In other words, the amount of precipitation falling on the migrated material is very low; It is not possible to reach Sabırlı Stream, groundwater or dam. There is no need to move such a thick mass, nor is it possible. This material can be afforested. Sodium cyanide residue is together with slaked lime and the pH is between 11-12. Sprinkling lime powder on the material with an agricultural spraying plane will prevent the formation of acid mine water, the transformation of the NaHCN compound if it has not evaporated and the dissolution of heavy metals in the material.”

CAN BE DONE IN PASTURE

Answering Hürriyet’s questions, Kantarcı stated that it was not possible to move 35 million tons of soil in the region and said: “Unfortunately, it is not possible to reach the bodies of 9 of our workers from such a pile. Since the region is an extremely arid steppe, it is not possible to transport the 50-meter mass through the dry Sabırlı Stream with rain or snow water. Therefore, there is no risk of interference with the dam or the Euphrates. The region is very windy, first slaked lime is poured and 30-40 cm of rust extracted from the mine is laid on top. The steppe tree is also afforested with larch. “Even if 10 percent is retained, the remaining areas are turned into pastures and animals are grazed, and protection from the wind is provided with trees that hold it.”

SEARCHES STOPPED

Search and rescue efforts initiated for 9 workers trapped underground in the disaster in the leaching area of Anagold’s Çöper Gold Mine were stopped after new landslide risks were detected in the region.
