Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered nuclear weapons exercises in Belgorod, Russia. This region is a border area close to Ukraine.

The Russian Defense Ministry said the drills would be held in the near future and involve the air force, navy and soldiers stationed near Ukraine. The Kremlin said this was the latest response to Western comments.

“The exercise aims to ensure Russia’s territorial integrity in the face of threats from certain Western officials,” it added CNBC International quoted Moscow officials, quoted Monday (6/5/2024).

“During the exercise, a series of actions will be taken to practice the preparation and use of non-strategic nuclear weapons,” he added.

The announcement came as authorities in the Belgorod region reported the deadliest attack in weeks. Two weeks ago, at least two people were killed in a missile attack from Ukrainian territory.

“This is a new chapter in escalating tensions. This is unprecedented and requires special measures,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said when asked by journalists.

Previously, French President Emmanuel Macron promised to send troops to Ukraine to fight Russia. He gave two conditions, including if Russia broke through the war front and if there was a direct request from Kyiv.

“I don’t rule out anything, because we are facing someone who doesn’t rule out anything,” Macron was quoted as saying Business Insider, last weekend.

“We cannot hesitate in determining the limits of our actions on someone who no longer has it and becomes an aggressor,” he added.

Even so, Macron emphasized that this was not a problem at this time. He also added that if Russia defeats Ukraine, they will likely try to attack other European countries.

Meanwhile in Kyiv, the Russian attack also caused hundreds of thousands of people to lose electricity. Kyiv said overnight Russian attacks on energy facilities north of Sumy and the northeastern region of Kharkiv, were a new ‘escalation’ after weeks.

“Thousands of homes lost electricity after the attack,” Ukraine’s Energy Ministry said.

“A total of 91 villages in Sumy are still without electricity and Kharkiv is also experiencing power outages,” he added.

Russia and Ukraine have been at war since February 24 2022. President Volodymyr Zelensky’s government’s desire to join NATO is one of the causes.

The second war caused world food and energy prices to soar. It should be noted that Ukraine is Europe’s food basket while Russia is Europe’s main source of oil, gas and coal.
