Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed a ceasefire in Ukraine to stop the ongoing war. However, Putin’s proposal reportedly received strong rejection from the United States (US), after communication between intermediaries.

As reported , Wednesday (14/2/2023), this information was revealed by three Russian sources who understand the discussion. The failure of Putin’s approach marks the third year of Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War II, and illustrates how wide the gap is between the world’s two largest nuclear powers.

A US source denied there was any official communication, and said Washington would not get involved in negotiations that did not involve Ukraine.

According to a number of quoted Russian sources Putin has sent signals to the US in 2023 publicly and privately through intermediaries, including through Arab partners in the Middle East and elsewhere, that he is ready to consider a ceasefire in Ukraine.

The source revealed that Putin had proposed ending the conflict according to the current boundaries and was not willing to hand over Ukrainian territories controlled by Russia. Some in the Kremlin see Putin’s proposal as the best path to peace.

“Contacts with America have yielded nothing,” said a senior Russian source familiar with the discussions that took place in late 2023 and early 2024. The source did not want to be named due to the sensitivity of the situation.

A second Russian source familiar with the communications told that Washington told Moscow, through intermediaries, that it would not discuss the possibility of a ceasefire without Ukraine’s participation and the communications failed.
