Rangers Injury Updates: Fox, Shesterkin, and Sheary’s Road to Recovery
The New York Rangers are navigating a crucial stretch of the season with several key players working their way back from injury. As the team prepares for a three-game slate before the NHL’s Olympic break, updates on defenseman adam Fox, goaltender Igor Shesterkin, and forward Conor Sheary offer a glimpse into their potential return timelines.
Adam Fox took a significant step in his rehabilitation on Wednesday, participating in an optional morning skate with a non-contact jersey. Head coach Mike Sullivan expressed optimism, stating it was “very” encouraging to see Fox progress to this stage. However, with only three games remaining - against the Islanders, in Pittsburgh, and versus the Hurricanes – time is running short for the 27-year-old to return to game action before the league pauses for the Winter Olympics in Milan. Sullivan acknowledged the uncertainty, but emphasized that Fox’s on-ice involvement indicates he’s nearing a return.
Fox’s injury history this season has been a concern for the Rangers faithful. He has only appeared in three games since November 29th, sidelined by both a shoulder injury and a more recent lower-body issue sustained on January 5th.
alongside Fox, Igor Shesterkin also continues his recovery from a lower-body injury suffered in the same January 5th game. While not yet participating in team drills, Shesterkin has been working with the team’s goalie coach, Jeff Malcolm, at the tarrytown training facility. Sullivan indicated that Fox is currently ahead of Shesterkin in their respective recovery processes.
Forward Conor Sheary is also progressing, joining the optional skate on Wednesday while wearing a non-contact jersey, mirroring Fox’s participation level.
In the absence of Shesterkin, Spencer martin has stepped into the net, starting four games and facing 36 shots in his moast recent outing. Sullivan has been utilizing a rotation between Martin and veteran Jonathan Quick, believing that sharing the workload benefits both goaltenders. “We weren’t sure how the workload would be for a guy like Quickie… So I think we get better versions of both guys when we share the work a little bit,” Sullivan explained.
