Rare Beaked Whale Identified Off California Coast After Decades-Long Mystery
For years, marine biologists have been puzzled by a group of elusive whales observed off the coast of California.Now, after meticulous research and a unique tissue-sampling technique, scientists have finally confirmed their identity: they are Ginkgo-toothed beaked whales ( Mesoplodon ginkgodens). This marks a meaningful range extension for the species,previously known primarily from the western pacific Ocean.
A Whale of a Mystery
beaked whales are among the least understood marine mammals. They spend most of their lives deep underwater, making them incredibly difficult to study. Researchers first encountered these particular whales in 2017, sparking a quest to determine their species. Initial suspicions leaned towards Perrin’s beaked whale, an even more elusive species known from only a handful of strandings.
“These whales are masters of disguise,” explains marine biologist Dr. Ted Henderson, a key member of the research team. “Their behavior and the limited visual data made pinpointing their identity incredibly challenging.”
The Power of Sound and a Unique Sampling Method
The team employed a multi-faceted approach, combining visual observations wiht acoustic monitoring using underwater microphones (hydrophones). They documented the whales’ behavior, photographed distinctive markings, and recorded their unique vocalizations. However, conclusive identification required genetic material.
Obtaining a sample proved tricky. Customary methods like biopsies can be stressful for the animals. Rather, the team utilized a specialized technique pioneered by veteran researcher Dr. Robert Pitman: a crossbow equipped with a modified arrow designed to collect a tiny skin and blubber plug.
“The crossbow arrow extracts a pencil-eraser-sized sample,” Pitman explains.”it’s a minimally invasive method we’ve refined over years of working with various whale and dolphin species.” He emphasizes that the tissue sample collected was significantly smaller than damage already inflicted by natural sources like cookiecutter shark bites.
Genetic Confirmation and a Surprising Discovery
After carefully retrieving the sample, researchers sent it to a geneticist for analysis. The results were surprising. while the whales looked like Ginkgo-toothed beaked whales, their location was unexpected.
“We were a bit shocked,” Henderson admits. “This wasn’t the expected area for their distribution, so we’d initially discounted that possibility. But the genetic data confirmed it – we had found Ginkgo-toothed beaked whales in the eastern Pacific.”
Why This Matters: Conservation Implications
ginkgo-toothed beaked whale strandings are relatively common in the western Pacific. However, only two individuals have ever been documented stranding on the eastern pacific side. This discovery expands our understanding of the species’ range and highlights the importance of continued research.

“We want to put faces to the underwater calls,” Pitman states. “This will allow us to better understand these elusive creatures and ensure their long-term survival.”
