RB Leipzig vs. Real Madrid: Champions League round of 16 0-1

Usury of opportunities, referee anger – and an artificial shot in the heart: RB Leipzig is threatened with elimination in the round of 16 in the Champions League despite a courageous performance against Real Madrid. In a first leg at eye level, the Bundesliga team demanded everything from the record winners of the premier class and ultimately lost extremely unfortunately 0-1 (0-0).

In the second leg on March 6th at the Bernabeu, RB has its back against the wall. Brahim Diaz (49th) reduced Leipzig’s chances of progressing with a remarkable goal. “We had our chances. In the end, a Sunday shot decides. That’s bitter for us. We weren’t the worse team,” said a disappointed Peter Gulacsi on Prime Video.

“We’re certainly not afraid, we’re not afraid of anything,” coach Marco Rose had said in advance. It was already clear before the game that at least Jude Bellingham posed no danger. The English superstar did not make the trip to Leipzig because of an injury to his left ankle. Toni Kroos, whose possible DFB comeback continues to be speculated, was in Real’s starting line-up.

Leipzig’s lightning strike is conceded – but why?

The 2014 world champion was initially challenged primarily defensively, because RB started with a lot of offensive urge – and celebrated early. After a poorly cleared corner, Benjamin Sesko headed the ball into the goal (2nd). The attacker was not offside, but Real’s strong goalkeeper Andrij Lunin was slightly hindered by national player Benjamin Henrichs – a tough and debatable decision by the often not confident referee Irfan Peljto.

“Maybe he hindered him, but the goalkeeper never gets to the ball. So it was a goal, it should have been given,” said Kroos and added with a laugh: “I can’t get out of that now, I can’t find any arguments against it.”

“It’s bitter at this level. Overall, the referee’s performance took a bit of getting used to for me,” explained Rose: “I’m assuming that it will be evaluated and hopefully they will realize that they were wrong. And if that If that’s the case, that would be a first step. It’s a vexed topic, you know my opinion on the VAR. We have all the options. The linesman raises the flag a little hesitantly. We discussed inside what he whistled in the first place .”

In the premier class you can “expect that this will be punished. But the boy is only human. It was his first knockout game in the Champions League and I hope that he learns from it,” added the RB coach .

Leipzig was not deterred by this. Rose’s team bridged the spaces with quick combinations or long balls and created further chances. Sesko aimed from a slightly tight angle in the penalty area but too centrally (10th). Leipzig stayed on the trigger: Henrichs failed from distance (15th), Sesko (19th) hit the side netting.

With a lot of possession, Leipzig managed to barely let Real’s playful strengths develop. When the Spaniards occasionally advanced into the final third, the defense was secure. The RB partially defended the dribbling of Real winger Vinicius Junior with three players.

A stroke of genius from Diaz is enough for Real Madrid

The game lost some structure and momentum. Many small fouls disrupted the flow of the game. Real came closest to taking the lead when Rodrygo narrowly missed a cross (42′).

Leipzig started the second half with a similar spirit to the first, but remained too imprecise in front of the goal. Brahim Diaz, on the other hand, took measures. The attacker did a lot of dribbling and shot the ball into the corner from around 20 meters. Even Bellingham was thrilled. “Oh my god Brahim!!!” he wrote after the hit on X.

Leipzig increased the risk and gave Real space to counterattack. Rodrygo (64th) had the second goal on his feet. Vinicius Junior (72nd) hit the post. But the hosts also remained dangerous. But Sesko failed because of Lunin (81′).

90. There are four minutes of injury time.

88. Leipzig presses hard again at the end. But with all the chances, they can’t complain about losing here in the end.

86. After a rebound, Sesko attempts an overhead kick from almost ten meters. Instead of the ball, however, he hits Tchouameni. The Slovenian also sees yellow.

85. Vinicius Jr. sees the yellow card because he does not keep the minimum distance from a Leipzig corner. You don’t see it every day either.

84. Ancelotti also brings Joselu for Rodrygo.

84. Diaz had previously been injured without any influence from the opponent and had to be substituted. Bitter end for the goalscorer! Vazquez comes into play for him.

82. Brahim Diaz immediately loses the ball to Haidara. He gets through to the free Sesko. But Lunin has the upper hand again.

81. Xavi with the chance to equalize! He first skilfully dribbles around Toni Kroos, puts the bouncing ball again with his thigh and shoots from a good 20 meters. Lunin can only fend off the impact from the front.

79. Schlager drives the ball forward and finds Xavi. He draws two opponents towards him and creates space. However, its flat flank finds no takers.

77. Less than two minutes on the field, Poulsen already sees the yellow box. The Dane had stepped on Camavinga’s heels.

75. Final offensive by the Leipzig team. Marco Rose changes three times. Haidara comes for Henrichs, Poulsen for the pale Openda and Elmas replaces Olmo.

RB Leipzig vs. Real Madrid: Champions League round of 16 – triple change at Leipzig

72. In the direct counterattack, Vinicius Jr. is once again unstoppable – only from the post! With a deadly hook, the Brazilian leaves Henrichs standing and finally spikes the ball flat to the right. However, the ball slowly rolls against the aluminum.

71. Olmo creates some space in the center and flicks the ball precisely towards the left corner of the goal. However, Lunin is there again.

68th power play for Madrid! Camavinga attracts three opponents and passes to Rodrygo at the last moment. But the Brazilian takes too long. At the moment of his pass to Vinicius Jr., his options have already been exhausted.

66. Carvajal brings down Xavi and gets his well-deserved yellow card. The home fans are happy about that.

64. Orban goes high into the duel, but cannot retain the ball. The hosts then stand there openly. Vinicius Jr. cleverly passes it to Rodrygo on the counterattack, but he doesn’t hit the ball properly. Lucky for Leipzig!

62. Olmo plays a brilliant pass with the outside of his foot to the starting Sesko, but Lunin just gets ahead of him on the edge of the penalty area. Olmo’s shot on the second attempt goes towards the stands.

60. Leipzig – it seems – has already missed its goals in the first half. More and more careless mistakes are creeping into the game, and pressing is no longer an option.

58. The goal obviously plays into the guests’ hands. Now they can let Leipzig play calmly and slow down. And they can do it like no other.

53. Simakan is shown a yellow card after pushing Carvajal in Los Blancos’ penalty area.

51. On the other hand, RB has the chance to equalize! Almost twelve meters from the goal, Olmo finds the gap and takes heart. But his shot is clearly too central and Sesko cannot use the rebound.

47. Again a Leipzig corner causes danger right after kick-off! This time David Raum finds the eye-catching Sesko, but he doesn’t hit the ball properly.

46. Shortly before kick-off, a shrill concert of whistles awaits the referees. Shortly afterwards the ball rolls again.

Half-time conclusion The Madrilenians have so far lacked some consistency in their offensive game. Only Vinicius Jr. posed problems for Leipzig on the left side time after time.

Half-time conclusion The 42,600 fans in the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig saw an extremely entertaining first half and were able to cheer for the first time right from the start. However, the referee team took Benjamin Sesko’s goal back somewhat questionably, as Henrich’s position behind the goalkeeper was interpreted as a passive offside. But the Saxons didn’t let this unsettle them and they pressed on courageously, often with success, but ultimately never with a goal – despite a few opportunities.

45.+1 Just one minute after regular playing time, referee Irfan Peljto brings the first half to an end. Break!

45. Openda is cleared in a duel, but in a fair manner – at least according to the referee’s assessment. Rose is so upset that he sees the yellow card.

43. Openda loses the ball in the build-up game, whereupon the Madrid train goes off. Kroos sends Vinicius Jr. on the wing again. But this time Henrichs doesn’t let himself be tricked and wins the ball to the applause of the audience.

42. On the other hand, it is Sesko again who is portrayed by Olmo. But Tchouameni clears for a corner at the last second. This will be clarified.

41. Vincius Jr. breaks through again on the left and looks for Rodryho with a cross. This time he just missed the ball. Lucky for Leipzig.

38. Meanwhile, Ancelotti abuses his chewing gum in such a way that it could soon change its shape.

37. Symbolic of the guests’ lack of concentration: Xavi puts Carvajal under slight pressure, whereupon he passes the ball so imprecisely that it ends up out of bounds. Real noticeably doesn’t get into a flow state.

33. Leipzig’s pressing works again. Sesko and Henrichs pass Mendy on the right and steal the ball from his feet. However, Henrich’s subsequent cross fails and sails out of bounds.

28. The tone becomes rougher. First Orban takes Madrid’s Valverde off his feet, then Carvajal completely clears Xavi. The referee decided not to issue yellow cards – to the displeasure of the Leipzig supporters.

25. It remains an entertaining encounter that thrives above all on the fact that both teams act on equal terms. RB Leipzig tends to be even closer to the lead than the guests from Madrid.

23. Vinicius Jr. is currently Real’s most noticeable player. Again he causes a stir on the left side. This time he passes it to Rodrygo, who cannot process the ball cleanly.

20. Directly in return, Olmo and Sesko combine again on the right side. After a through pass, the Slovenian shoots from an acute angle. But the ball is deflected out of bounds. The following corner brings nothing.

19. Vinicius Jr. asks Simakan to dance on the left wing and then chips the ball into the center. The attempt at clarification ends up with Toni Kroos via a detour. However, his half-high shot from the second row does not pose any problems for Gulacsi.

15. But when Real is in possession of the ball again, RB knows exactly how to put pressure on the last row. This time Nacho makes a bad pass into the feet of Xavi. He passes it again to Henrichs, who shoots from almost 25 meters. The shot, however, was not a problem for Lunin.

14. After the turbulent initial phase, the game calmed down again. This is also because Real is currently letting Leipzig have the ball.

10. On the other side, Leipzig is dangerous again! Olmo sends Sesko on the right, who suddenly only has Lunin in front of him. However, the Ukrainian has the upper hand in one-on-one situations.

8. The first chance for Real! Kroos circles a corner from the right side into the back area, where he finds Camavinga. His header has to be cleared by Henrichs at the right post. Camavinga’s follow-up shot is no longer a problem for Gulacsi.

5. Immediately afterwards, Xavi lobs a ball over Real’s last row to the incoming Olmo. However, its conclusion is too hasty and therefore not a problem for Lunin. It’s a shame, there was more to it! Still a great start from Leipzig.

2. Leipzig gets the first corner straight away and it’s tough. Real keeper Lunin punches the ball directly into Schlager’s feet, whose cross finds Sesko’s head. Lunin still rushes far out of the goal and can’t reach it anymore. However, the goal did not count because Henrichs, who was offside, had hindered Lunin. A very hard decision.

1. The game is on. RB Leipzig has the first possession of the ball.
