Renault’s strategy for the next decade includes the retention of internal combustion engines in the car range, as well as the introduction of electric vehicles. This approach is intended to allow Renault to remain flexible in response to market trends, especially given the slower-than-expected adoption of electric vehicles. While other automakers are making statements about their electric vehicle ambitions, Renault is taking a more cautious stance.
Although group CEO Luca de Meo previously hinted at a potential transition to an all-electric European range by 2030, he also stressed that the timetable would depend on prevailing market conditions. However, Renault predicts that petrol and hybrid cars will continue to play a significant role, accounting for up to 40% of the market by 2040.
Kamboliev has now further developed Renault’s approach, indicating that the company will offer both electric and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles with hybrid technology in each segment. This means that models such as the Renault 5 EV will coexist with LPG counterparts such as the Clio, occupying similar positions in their respective market segments.
Meanwhile, Renault is not the only automaker to adjust its product forecasts. Most recently, Mercedes Benz revised its earlier forecast of achieving 100% electric car sales by 2030. Instead, the company is focusing on the continued development of ICE and hybrid technologies well into the next decade. This change reflects a pragmatic recognition of the changing automotive landscape and consumer preferences, ensuring that both traditional and electric powertrains remain options for consumers.
