As far as residents are concerned, there may be some acceleration with the partial doubling of the N862. The municipality of Emmen went to Klazienaveen and Nieuw-Dordrecht this week with the final design for the redesign of the road between Emmen and Klazienaveen. Better to break ground today than tomorrow.

Tonight the municipality of Emmen held an information evening in the De Klink village hall in Nieuw-Dordrecht. Last night there was also a place in the De Zon sports hall in Klazienaveen. According to project manager Ronald Enrens, about 50 to 60 people came to Klazienaveen and generally people are positive.

In a sense, no surprise, because the Emmen-Klazienaveen road is no fun for road users during peak hours. Over a distance of just under 2.5 kilometers you will pass an intersection with traffic lights at Nieuw-Dordrecht and three roundabouts. At the busiest times there is a big car and truck polonaise.

In short, the flow had to be improved. After several years of puzzling and consultation with local residents and neighboring residents, a plan has been rolled out. The road section between Nieuw-Dordrecht and Klazienaveen will be doubled. According to Enrens, the work will be carried out in three phases. This year we will start at Klazienaveen. In addition, there will be turbo roundabouts with center guidance on both sides of the entrances and exits of the A37.

“We also include a part of the Antares (the road that connects to the N862 from Klazienaveen). From both sides of the road, road users sometimes want to turn off to the pumping station and that regularly leads to collisions. A central guideline is installed along this part of the road. should provide a solution. “Anyone who wants to go to the gas station from Klazienaveen will first have to take the turbo roundabout,” says Elrens.

About a year later, the project manager expects that the part at Nieuw-Dordrecht will be tackled. The traffic lights and intersection with exits to the village center and Bargermeer industrial estate will disappear. A grade-separated oven will be replaced.

This is the largest job of the project. Elrens expects that work at this location will last until possibly 2027. Cyclists and pedestrians can also cross more safely via the oven than is currently the case.

The middle section of the N862, around the entrance towards Business Park A37, is discussed last. A turbo roundabout will also be built at that exit and the bridge over the King Willem Alexander Canal will be tackled. According to Elrens, all work will be completed in 2028.

The entire approach to the N862 will cost 28 million euros, of which the municipality will pay approximately two-thirds. The province pays the rest. The connection to the Emmen Rondweg will be discussed at a later stage.

Visitors to the information evening were positive about the procedure. This also applies to Roelie Arends from Nieuw-Dordrecht. According to him, there is no passage on the N862 during rush hour. “Everything on the road comes to a standstill around a quarter past four or half past five. But soon it will be four lanes and then it will continue smoothly. As far as I’m concerned, they can start work tomorrow.”

Gerda Schenk is present on behalf of the village council of neighboring Oranjedorp. “A tricky point for our residents was the crossing of cyclists and pedestrians, such as students who have to go to the other side of the road.” Now that this group has been separated from fast traffic in the new design (they go above via the oven), traffic safety will soon improve in that regard, Schenk expects.

Gienus Wever from Nieuw-Dordrecht is happy that ‘one of the busiest intersections in the municipality of Emmen’ is finally being tackled. “A good plan, because collisions sometimes occur.” He also praises the doubling. “I’ll soon get to my destination a little faster. As far as I’m concerned, the light should be green.”
