Football with yellow and red cards: it is a concept that has determined the course of football matches since time immemorial.

However, according to The Telegraph, a historic change is afoot. The newspaper has the scoop that a test phase with blue cards will soon start.

The IFAB, the body that determines football regulations, reportedly wants to announce this on Friday.

Blue cards would be handed out to players who made a cynical mistake or misbehaved. The ‘punished’ person must then be taken to the side for 10 minutes.

Two times blue or blue plus yellow would equal red.

The Telegraph writes that the test phase would start this summer. Not yet in the top competitions, but in tournaments such as the FA Cup.

The line of thought is not entirely new, however. Hockey already uses green cards, which send recipients to the penalty box for 2 minutes. A time penalty is also a daily occurrence in handball and ice hockey.

And in 2017, the IFAB already approved the introduction of temporary exclusions in amateur and youth categories, among others. The aim of this was to reduce any tensions on the field and improve fair play.

Professional football was not covered by this measure at the time, but – if we can believe The Telegraph – that will change in the future.

Pierluigi Collina, referee boss at FIFA, previously stated on the subject that “the trial period with the amateurs was convincing. We are now talking about a much higher, very professional level. We have to develop something that works or is worthy of top football.”
