Just like Infostart reported, the German military and vehicle industry company Rheinmetall will build its fourth Hungarian site in Szeged, which will be the company group’s first hybrid plant, as the civil business and defense technology activities will take place under one roof. The foundation stone of the Szeged factory was laid on Tuesday, and according to the plans, production can start from the end of 2025. In the new plant – which will create three hundred new jobs – tools for electromobility and hydrogen-powered vehicles will be manufactured using cutting-edge technology.

The facility will be developed with an investment of 63 million euros (about HUF 25 billion).

According to Flórián Hecker, a factory that has never been seen before is being built in Hungary, because the Szeged plant not only serves the defense industry, but according to the promises, it will also perform manufacturing work in the civilian segment. A vg.hu employee told InfoRádio: Rheinmetall is often referred to as one of the largest military companies in the world, even though the German company group is also a dominant player in the vehicle industry. It is a technology group that, in addition to component production, also develops various systems and services. The journalist recalled that Hungarian interest in Rheinmetall has become more and more pronounced in recent years, as three sites were previously built in our country.

Rheinmetall operated twenty-two factories worldwide, and if the Szeged plant is built, the company will already be present in four locations in Hungary.

“This clearly illustrates how embedded the German company is in the Hungarian economy”

Flórián Hecker remarked.

The Minister of National Defense Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky also gave a speech at the groundbreaking ceremony, who emphasized that the Szeged plant is one of Europe’s defining research and development projects, which not only creates jobs, but also attracts knowledge.

In Rheinmetall’s other factories, they mainly carry out production and assembly work, but in Szeged, in addition to all this

they will also carry out research and development activities, so presumably the new Hungarian site will also receive special attention abroad.

“The Hungarian industrial infrastructure is being expanded with a new unit that has not been typical in our country so far,” added the journalist.

In addition to military equipment, machines and equipment, the Szeged plant will also produce parts for various vehicles, such as electric cars. It is good news for the actors of the civil sector that nanostructured capacitors will also be produced at the new site, and devices that can be used in hydrogen mobility will also be developed and manufactured.

Flórián Hecker reminded that Rheinmetall also has an electronics division, which also produces devices for the military industry – for example, the most modern drones are also created in this department. The company group also announced that some of the electronic products for military purposes will be manufactured in Szeged, which, according to the journalist, suggests that in the future the southern Great Plain city may even be a dominant player in European drone production.
