The war between Hamas and IsraeldossierThe Franco-Palestinian learned this Friday April 19 that she was summoned by the police for events which allegedly occurred between November 5 and December 1. The person concerned says she does not know what she is accused of.

She denounces a “political” act. The Franco-Palestinian activist and LFI candidate for the European elections, Rima Hassan, learned this Friday, April 19 of his summons to the National Directorate of the Judicial Police in order to be heard freely, on April 30 in the morning. This for acts of “public apology for an act of terrorism, committed by means of an online public communication service”, according to the summons, which Libération was able to consult. Facts which would have occurred between November 5 and December 1 according to the same document. “I don’t know what it is,” says Rima Hassan.

To Libération, Rima Hassan denounces an event which “is part of a politically worrying climate which consists of undermining a certain number of our fundamental freedoms”. “In an election context, political differences do not have to be expressed through this kind of attempt at intimidation,” she adds. An allusion to the two prohibitions from the University of Lille et of the Northern Prefecture concerning a conference on Palestine in which she was to participate with Jean-Luc Mélenchon on Thursday. Instead, the rebels finally organized an open-air mobilization to denounce a “banana republic abuse of power”says the rebellious leader.

A controversial video in January

In a press release, La France insoumise deplores an “unacceptable decision [qui] confirms an attempt to intimidate and criminalize all voices raised in the face of the ongoing massacres in Gaza. “We recall that Rima Hassan clearly condemned, from the first day, the actions committed by Hamas on October 7, calling them terrorist attacks and indicating “that it was morally unacceptable to rejoice in the deaths of civilians, both on the Palestinian side and on the Israeli side,” the rebels also write.

In January, a controversy broke out after the publication of a short video from the online media Crayon, filmed in November, featuring the graduate of a master’s degree in international law. In the extract shared on social networks, the Franco-Palestinian was invited to respond simply with “true” or “false” to a series of questions such as: “The State of Israel has a right of defense?” or “Is the two-state solution possible?” A question arises about Hamas, responsible for the bloody attack on October 7 in southern Israel. “Is Hamas carrying out legitimate action?” asks the interviewer. “True,” replies the interviewee. The canvas catches fire. The video clip was quickly deleted after several reports for “apology of terrorism”.

“But the dates do not coincide since the summons speaks of facts dating from November/December and the video was released at the end of January,” notes the candidate who had defended herself from any apology for the attack of October 7 . In a portrait published in Libération, she affirmed, for example, “condemning the war crimes of Hamas”. “Contrary to the comments attributed to her, Rima Hassan NEVER said that the actions of October 7 were legitimate. She recalled that two UN resolutions enshrine the legitimacy of armed groups but that massacres of civilians are war crimes, even crimes against humanity, which fall under international law,” adds LFI in its communicated.

“A great specialist in international law”

Since the announcement of her candidacy in 7th position on the La France insoumise list for the European elections – an eligible position – Rima Hassan has been particularly highlighted by the Mélenchonist movement. At LFI, we praise “a great specialist in international law capable of speaking to the inhabitants of the 11th arrondissement of Paris as well as those of working-class neighborhoods”, as a member of the Ile-de-France region explained at the end of March. In this campaign and in the next five years, if elected to the European Parliament, the political neophyte promises “to carry the voice of the Palestinians”.
