Royal families from teh Netherlands and the United kingdom are prominently represented at the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter olympic Games,demonstrating their longstanding support for the event and its athletes. The Dutch and British royals have been actively involved with the Olympics for decades, both in attendance and in official capacities.
Dutch Royal Presence
King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands arrived in Italy with their eldest daughter, Crown Princess Catharina-Amalia, and will remain until february 10th to enjoy the competitions. The Royal Palace announced that King Willem-Alexander has been invited as an honorary member of the international Olympic Committee (IOC). They are scheduled to visit the Olympic Village on Saturday, February 7th, to meet with Team NL.
Princess Anne Leads British Delegation
Princess Anne, accompanied by her husband, Sir Timothy Laurence, is leading the British royal presence at the Games. She was among the first royals to arrive in Milan earlier this week, as reported by Vanity Fair. Princess anne has been an IOC member since 1988 and also serves as President of the British Olympic Association. She has consistently supported Team Great Britain (Team GB) at both the Winter and Summer Games.
“I am looking forward to visiting the Olympic venues,” Princess Anne told reporters.
A Legacy of Olympic Involvement
Princess Anne’s connection to the Olympics dates back to 1976 when she first attended the Montreal Games, making her the first member of the British royal family to participate in the Olympics. Her involvement was especially crucial in the lead-up to the 2012 London Olympics, where she served as a director of the London Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, playing a key role in the success of the bid. She also officially received the Olympic flame in Athens and initiated its 8,000-mile journey across Britain.
