Russian ambassador expelled from Poland? “It’s the nuclear option”

On Sunday, March 24, a Russian missile entered Polish airspace once again. Although it stayed over our country for only 39 seconds, the incident was treated very seriously. Therefore, to Polish ministry of foreign affairs the Russian ambassador, Sergei Andreev, was invited.

However, he decided not to appear at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which he decided to report in the Russian media. He said there that he ruled out this option, which pleased the authorities in the Kremlin.

I refused to visit the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs because I decided that there was no point in raising this topic without presenting evidence. We are still waiting for evidence from the Polish side that it was a Russian cruise missile that entered Polish airspace. We have not received any confirmation of this yet. I suggested to my Polish colleagues that if they wanted, they could send an appropriate diplomatic note by post or courier, Andreev told the Russian state agency RIA Novosti.

The ambassador’s words caused a huge media storm. Many people called on the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs to react radically to such behavior by the Russian diplomat. However, it turns out that expelling Andreev from Poland is not necessarily the right option.

In an interview with the “Gazeta.pl” portal, Łukasz Jasina, the former, commented on the situation spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The behavior of the Russian ambassador is surprising from his perspective and it is indeed worth taking some action as a result. He admits, however, that Poland would not benefit from an order for the diplomat to leave the country in the current situation. It indicates better options at the moment.

– Expulsion of the ambassador is the final step. If our policy assumes that we allow Ambassador Andreev to reside in Poland in exchange for the fact that our ambassador, Krzysztof Krajewski, can stay in Moscow, then such a decision should wait until the very end. Before taking it, it is possible to expel other representatives of Russian diplomacy, says Yasina.

The Russian ambassador ignored the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. These are not the first problems with Andreev

According to the former Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman, in the face of Andreev’s behavior, expelling him from the country would be possible, but this is a last resort., which would have to be approached with great caution and awareness of the consequences. There is even a statement about the “nuclear option”.

– This was also the nuclear option during the times of Minister Rau, when we were dealing with various activities on the part of Russia. The fact is that Ambassador Andreyev has never dared to ignore the minister’s call before, and he was called often. We even joked that he should have his own room at the resort. There were some behaviors that were not entirely consistent with his diplomatic status – ignoring what the minister said to him, some smiles – but just showing up at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was never a problem.

Yasina adds that yes, expelling a diplomat would be possible, but this of course, it would involve a twin move on Russia’s part and a severance of relations. In the current situation, which is already tense, it would be turning on the burner over a pot of already quite hot water.
