The students of OBS ‘t Koppel in Nieuw-Weerdinge have been on an emotional rollercoaster in recent days. They have been studying a special King’s Song for the king’s arrival in Emmen for months, but they were very sad to hear that they were not included in the program. Yet the song will soon be heard throughout the Netherlands.

The children from group 7/8 are bouncing around the classroom of music teacher Lisette Schriever again today with a big smile, because they have received an invitation to perform the song live on national radio. And the municipality of Emmen also came up with a helping hand: the students can perform during the King’s Games on April 26. So the studying of the past few months has not been in vain.

Earlier this week it became clear that children are not allowed to sing for the king during King’s Day. “More than five hundred ideas have been submitted for King’s Day,” a spokesperson for the Government Information Service explains. “Choices have to be made.”

Today was a chaotic day for the music teacher. “The day started this morning at a quarter to nine with a telephone interview with Jan-Willem Roodbeen. I walked out of the classroom for this, but they were listening live in all the classrooms.” An explosion of joy went through the school when Roodbeen spoke the words: “There is one thing more fun than singing for the king, and that is singing in the Morning Show.”

“This is secretly even more fun than performing for the king,” Schriever admits, laughing. And the invitation was received with enormous enthusiasm by the children. “We will become a famous school,” rang through the corridors of OBS ‘t Koppel.

And it didn’t end there for the teacher and her students, because the Youth News also came to visit during the afternoon. “The children were completely wild. The attention calls them ‘very special’.

At that moment, Schriever did not even know that the municipality of Emmen had also changed tack. The Government Information Service (RVD) announced that group 7/8 of the school in Nieuw-Weerdinge can also expect an invitation from the municipality of Emmen to sing their song during the King’s Games on April 26. “Oh really? I hadn’t heard of that before, but that sure is fun.”

In terms of planning, it will be a bit of a puzzle for the teacher and her students. The Radio 2 morning show would like to visit Nieuw-Weerdinge on April 26 and the King’s Games will also be organized on this day, but the school will already have an official May holiday. So parents are asked if the children can still come by on April 26 to perform their King’s Song.

Not only from the media, but also in the region, a lot of thought was given today to give the children a special performance. “We will be celebrating the King’s Games next Wednesday and an entertainment company will also be attending with a bouncy castle,” says Schriever. “The owner already suggested ‘I will come dressed as a king, so that the children can still sing for the king.'”
