Guests reported that rides came to an immediate halt while indoor facilities, including restrooms, experienced sudden service interruptions tied to the electrical grid failure.
Visitors Disappointed by Back-to-Back Closures
For guests who traveled significant distances to experience the San Diego attraction, the weekend closures proved especially frustrating. Jenny Harris drove from Sonoma County with her granddaughter, Caila, hoping to enjoy the park during their summer vacation, according to local broadcasting reports.
“It’s so disappointing,” Harris said, noting that they had purchased two-day admission tickets but could not use them. The disruption first impacted their itinerary on Friday while they were seated inside an auditorium. “We went yesterday, and we’re right in the middle of the orca show, and it just went dark.”
When Harris and her granddaughter returned on Saturday, warning signs were immediately apparent before they even reached the parking lot. Traffic signals near the entrance were dark and blinking, signaling another operational failure before park staff turned arriving visitors away.
“We’re in traffic again. We’re like, this is where the telltale sign. The lights were blinking, the red lights weren’t working, so the signals weren’t working. I go, oh, oh, this isn’t good, we pull in and sure enough, they told us to leave because the park closed again,” Harris recounted.
Visitors noted that the sudden silence of idle roller coasters created a surreal atmosphere before staff members directed crowds toward the exits.
Concert Cancellations and Operational Impact
In addition to halted rides and dark animal exhibits, the weekend outages forced the cancellation of live entertainment. A scheduled performance by pop singer Jordin Sparks had to be scrapped as technicians and park operators scrambled to address the infrastructure failure.
With the park gates remaining closed for the bulk of the weekend, families like Harris’s were forced to alter their vacation itineraries entirely. Instead of spending their afternoon on park grounds, Harris took her granddaughter to a local beach, noting that the timing of the trip was especially significant given her granddaughter’s age and growing independence.
“You know, no more SeaWorld for her. It’s very disappointing. I think it was more disappointing for me than for her because of her age. And I know she’s not going to really, you know, want to do stuff with grandma anymore,” Harris said.
