Serafino, the establishment planned for the corner of Washington and Albatross streets, aims to combine hospitality with inclusive hiring practices. The project represents a collaboration between four founding members who bring together experience in hospitality and special education to create what they describe as an inclusive experience for both customers, and staff.
The location has drawn attention from neighborhood residents who note the property has been vacant for several years. Harvey Kampton, a local resident, expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming opening, highlighting his appreciation for businesses that hire people with learning disabilities. Kampton shared that he has previously employed individuals with learning disabilities in his law practice and found them to be valuable team members when given repetitive tasks to master.
According to Amanda Sarich, one of the founding members and a San Diego native, Serafino will operate as an all-day establishment offering coffee in the morning, grab-and-go bites during daytime hours, and wine service in the evening. The founders envision the space as more than just a cafe and wine bar, planning to include areas for private dining, classes, group gatherings, and tastings of wine, olive oil, and coffee. Sarich also mentioned ongoing discussions with local roasters and food vendors about potential collaborations.
The initiative stems from the founders’ observation that individuals with developmental disabilities often thrive when given clear tasks and opportunities to focus. Sarich noted that providing such opportunities allows these individuals to excel and contribute meaningfully to the workplace.
