There are other differences and similarities besides color, texture and taste.

Nutrients: Basically, the two types of mushrooms do not differ in their nutrient content. According to the South Tyrol consumer advice center, white and brown mushrooms are rich in B vitamins, minerals and vegetable protein. They also contain very few calories.

Use: Both white and brown mushrooms show little difference in use. Both can be used equally in vegetable and mushroom stir-fries, sauces, fried as a side dish or as a topping for salads or sandwiches.

Price: However, brown mushrooms tend to be more expensive than their white counterparts. This is due to their slower growth. According to the South Tyrol Consumer Center, the harvest yield is therefore lower, which leads to higher prices compared to the faster-growing white mushrooms.

Tip: Regardless of color, it is recommended to purchase mushrooms between June and October when they are in season and locally grown. Additionally, it is advisable to look for organic products to avoid the use of chemical-synthetic pesticides. Or you can simply grow your mushrooms yourself, then you can harvest all year round. There are now various suppliers who sell ready-made mushroom breeding sets.
