sosie Secures Hong Kong Vase Victory in Thrilling Finish
Sosie delivered a masterful performance at Sha Tin Racecourse, claiming victory in the prestigious LONGINES Hong Kong Vase. The four-year-old colt, expertly ridden by Maxime Guyon, showcased both stamina and a remarkable temperament throughout the challenging race. This win marks another significant achievement for the horse and his connections, building on a stellar season of Group 1 triumphs.
A Strategic race Unfolds
The pace of the race began cautiously, setting the stage for a dramatic finish. As the field rounded the final turn, a clear picture of the contenders emerged. Guyon opted for a wide path, navigating Sosie around the tiring Urban Chic. Meanwhile, Christophe Soumillon demonstrated daring skill, guiding Goliath along the inside rail to secure a strong third-place finish.
The decisive move came as Los Angeles, initially tracking well, began to lose momentum on the home turn. Sosie seized the prospect, relentlessly closing the gap and ultimately surging ahead. His ability to sustain a powerful run proved decisive, making him incredibly difficult to pass.
Guyon Praises Sosie’s Resilience
Following the victory, Guyon emphasized Sosie’s exceptional qualities. “Everything went very smoothly,” he stated, adding to his notable record in the LONGINES Hong Kong Vase with previous wins aboard Flintshire (2014) and Junko (2023). He highlighted the horse’s adaptability and ease of handling.
“I followed Los angeles for the majority of the race,” Guyon explained. “However, when Ryan’s horse faltered, Sosie responded beautifully. He possesses an astonishing ability to maintain his speed and is a truly challenging horse to overtake.”
A Season of dominance
This Hong Kong Vase win caps off an outstanding year for Sosie. Earlier in the season, he secured victories in both the Group 1 Prix Ganay and the Group 1 Prix d’Ispahan, solidifying his position as a leading international contender.
Guyon further lauded Sosie’s composure, especially considering the significant journey. “He is an incredible horse,” he said. “This was his first time traveling across continents, yet he remained remarkably relaxed throughout the week and looked fantastic.”
Connections celebrate a Familiar Success
The win resonated deeply with the team behind Sosie, echoing a previous triumph. As Guyon noted, the same owner, trainer, and jockey celebrated success with Junko in the 2023 Hong Kong Vase. This continuity and shared accomplishment added an extra layer of joy to the victory.
Strong Performances from Contenders
Goliath, the group 1 Grosser Preis von Baden winner, delivered a commendable performance, finishing in third place. Al Riffa, ridden by Dylan Browne McMonagle, secured fourth, despite a slightly slow start. “He ran a super race,” McMonagle commented. “He wasn’t the quickest from the gates, which wasn’t ideal over this distance, but he finished strongly.”
Los Angeles, in his final race before retirement to stud, ran a respectable fifth under Ryan Moore. Moore acknowledged a solid effort, stating,”He ran very well, and I was happy with his performance.”
This victory underscores Sosie’s exceptional talent and positions him as a force to be reckoned with in international racing. You can expect to see this remarkable colt continue to excel on the world stage.
