Traces of radioactivity were found in Japanese-made confectionery products that South Korea intended to import. Importers are urged to cancel import plans.

South Korean media Yonhap News Agency reported that the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) found cesium of 1 bequarel (Bq) per kilogram in candy products produced in Shizuoka prefecture, Japan. A total of 122 kg of this product is planned to be imported to South Korea.

Quoted from Yonhap, Saturday (9/3/2024), the cesium levels found were still below the safe threshold of 100 Bq/kg. However, MFDS asked importers to carry out further checks on other radioactive nuclides.

This is not the first time South Korea has reported the finding of traces of cesium in food products from Japan. Last year, traces of cesium were found four times in Japanese-made products intended to be imported, and all were eventually cancelled.

What is Cesium?

Quoted from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (US CDC), Cesium is an element that is naturally found in small quantities along with other elements in rocks, soil and dust. Cesium or Cs which is found naturally is generally a stable form that is not radioactive, namely Cs 133.

Nuclear explosions or the breakdown of uranium can produce two forms of radioactive cesium, namely Cs 134 and Cs 137. Exposure to large amounts of radioactive cesium is said to be able to trigger damage to body cells due to radiation.

  • Diarrhea
  • Bleeding

  • Even death on display in a high rate.
